Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 Help

I keep having problems with pop-ups who root cause seems to be related to the Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 that keeps showing up after running SBS &D. Completed the recommended procedures and here is a copy of my log file:

Welcome to the forum, the version of Smitfraudfix you used is obsolete, it needs to be updated at times daily to keep up with the hackers. Remove the old version from your computer and download it fresh here:

Please run only the "Search" feature as problems can occur when the fix is run on an uninfected Desktop. If it locates anything which will be indicated clearly like this: Found! then continue with the "Clean" process. Once you have done this post the C:\Report.txt and a new HJT log. There is other junk we need to remove. Include your comments, how is the computer running?

I should add that this: Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 was a false positive appearing back a while, see this information:

Thanks for looking at my log files. I've tried several times to download the updated smitfraud fix but keep getting, page cannot be displayed. I'll keep trying. I've been using Spybot version 1.4 with the latest updates. My computer has been getting lots of annoying pop ups and it really slows down at times. The drive light is constantly on even when I'm not doing anything.

Thanks for the feedback, I just clicked that link and it is working fine, so it must be your computer. It may be you cleaned all of the Smitfraud infection but keep trying to download that new version and make sure you run only the "Search" when you get it unless you see additional infection missed by the out of date version.

"lot's of popups" tells me nothing, different infections cause popups directed to different junk they want to steal your money with. Like the word SmitFRAUD. It appears we may have a Vundo trojan. Please do this.
Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
When you get HJT moved, then point the mouse at the .exe and right click then choose "rename" and call it hollywood7.exe or whatever you wish. After a reboot we may see 02/020 items to indicate a Vundo infection we will need to remove.

Let get rid of a little junk, see this information:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exeFor your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ktnwfoaw.dll << delete this file
Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback:

NOTE: I was not able to delete: ktnwfoaw.dll, stated it was in use by another program.
It's your computer, when you want to get rid of a bad file, boot to safe mode and delete it there when it's not running.

As you can see from the HJT log, you have a bad Vundo infection. Please follow the instructions exactly. Understand that Vundofix may take several tries to learn and remove the bad junk. You want the Vundofix log to show all files "have been deleted" before moving on. Follow the instruction in the posted order.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

1) Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the log from Vundofix and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running.

This looks to be the newest: C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10\ I did not mention it earlier because I saw you were running the newest version. Uninstall everything but the newest in Add Remove programs. As long as they are there hackers can use them to infect you.

Use HJT to remove this dead Vundo item:

What's this? C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\notepad.exe I have never seen notepad run from there, scan to make sure it is not a problem:

The balance of the HJT log looks fine, let's clean the System Restore files:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Completed the items above. Could not find: C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\notepad.exe

Already had system restore turned off, but turned it back on.

System seems to be running better/faster. Have not seen any annoying pop-ups when using IEX6.0. Have noticed drive light not running frequently and programs seem to be loading faster.

Tried to send the AVG log but it was too long and I could not send this reply.

Any other actions needed?

The AVG Anti-Spyware log: Make sure you deleted or at least quarantined anything located, then you can edit out cookies, recycle bin, anything you know about and post only the stuff you are unsure of. Then since you seem to be running well, you should be good to go.
