My father had some problems with text in the body of emails that he printed suddenly being extra large and having extra large text in Internet Explorer even though he was sure he hadn't changed any settings.

I ran Spybot and it found "GoClick", "Tagasaurus", "Win32small.ddx" & smitfraud-C.Toolbar888. Given the info on smitfraud I unchecked it and let Spybot fix the other 3 problems which haven't reappeared with subsequent scans. For smitfraud I couldn't find the threads to kill following the Process Explorer information and so looked on the internet and found info about the SmitFraudFix tool by S!Ri. I did the search and then ran the Clean option in safe mode but Spybot still showed smitfraud as a problem. I decided to let Spybot fix it despite what the info on it said and after rebooting and rescanning Spybot is clean. I tested the email that was consistently printing out with large text in the body and it now prints correctly with text all the same size.

Is it possible for someone to please tell me from the HijackThis and SmitfraudFix logs that I've just run (pasted below) whether the computer is rid of smitfraud now or whether I need to do something else?

Welcome to the forum, so much of the Smitfraud infection (often all of it) is hidden and the C:\Report.txt report from a current version of Smitfraudfix is the best we can hope for. S!Ri updates the fix almost daily to keep up with the hackers. Let's have a look.

1) The HJT log is formatted and I can not scan it. You have "Word Wrap" turned on in notepad under "Format".
From a visual check it appears to be clean. You have AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 onboard, if you wish, follow these directions:
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165
and post the scan results for a look. The scan will do a better job in Safe Mode.

2) Fix run in normal mode <<< assuming you are showing me a scan results from "Search", this appears to be clean of the infection.

3) smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 <<< this is a false postive, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=8668
Is your version of Spybot current? I thought this was updated for?

Thanks

Hi

Thanks for your reply & help.

Re (1)
Have updated & run AVG anti-spyware. First in normal mode and then in safe mode (after I re-read your post!). Both reports are below.

HijackThis log without word wrap also below.

Re (2)
Yes, SmitFraudFix scan result was from running Search.

Re (3)
Yes, Spybot was fully up to date. Running version 1.4. Ran update again and no new update was found. Ran scan again and it didn't find anything.

The link you gave in item 3 seemed to be about tablet PCs. My father's PC is a Dell Dimension 3000 running XP Home so would this information apply?

It mentioned System Restore in the link which reminded me that I probably should have mentioned that having seen the problems with the extra large text the first thing we did was a System Restore back to 14 December. Then when the email still printed with large text I updated Spybot and Ad-Aware & ran them with the Spybot result as in my previous post and 6 or 7 tracking cookies found and deleted by Ad-Aware. Don't know if having done the System Restore first confuses things.

Thanks in advance for any further help you can provide.

We will fix this false positive as soon as possible. Thanks for reporting!
Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 <<< is a false positive and you can ignore it.

It mentioned System Restore in the link
I always clean System Restore when an infection has been on the computer, but to avoid doing it more than once, I wait until the computer is clean.

All of the logs you posted look fine, you can rename HJT.exe if you wish, and delete the tools you downloaded for the fix. If you are back to normal, I would say you are good to go. Let's finish up like this:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Thanks Phil. I appreciate the help.

I'll turn off system restore to get rid of all the restore points and then turn it back on. Then we'll look at the links you posted to see what we need to do to improve secuity on the computer in the future.

Thanks again.
