It appears my Internet Explorer Home Page and the Search capability have been infiltrated with some kind of malware. Specifically, the home page is sometimes changed and the Google search gets re-routed. I would appreciate any assistance in identifying the harmful item(s) as well as in ridding the computer of such items.

I ran the Panda online scan and it has identified a number of things. The log report follows:

Hello dongalley,

Welcome to Safer Networking Forums :)

I have merged the 3 threads you started to this one. In future replies, please use the Post Reply button, rather than start a new thread each time. Thanks.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{5EA562C8-B315-4149-B90C-1CD5F9CA545B}: NameServer = 85.255.116.110,85.255.112.113
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.110 85.255.112.113
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{5EA562C8-B315-4149-B90C-1CD5F9CA545B}: NameServer = 85.255.116.110,85.255.112.113
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.110 85.255.112.113

If you do not use Logitech Desktop Messenger, then check the following, as well as all those 018 entries :

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] \Program\
O4 - Global Startup: Logitech Desktop Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LDMConf.exe

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".

If you checked all the Logitech entries, then delete the following folder in bold:

C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Click Start>Run> Type in (or copy and paste) ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter. You'll get a confirmation that the flush was successful.

FOR CONNECTION PROBLEMS :
Click on Start, Control Panel, select the Network and Internet Connections category or double click on Network Connections, depending on which View you are using. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item. Write down the settings in case you should need to change them back. Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks. If it does not prompt you to reboot go ahead and reboot manually.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

Thanks,
tea

Thanks Tea.

I did everything you suggested and at least for the moment, things look good. Interestingly, I've been having trouble with both a Logitech wireless Mouse and a wireless Keyboard for a couple of weeks. This coincides with the redirect problem you are trying to help me fix. It never occurred to me the two issues might be connected. However, your fix suggested deleting the Logitech Desktop Manager (which I've now done).

The logs you've requested are below.

Thanks again for all the wonderful help.

Hello,

How is it running now? Your log looks clean, but I'd like to run an online scan to be sure, please. :)

Please go here to run Panda's ActiveScan. http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button

A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
Enter your State/Providence
Enter your E-mail address and click send.
Select either Home user or Company.

Click the big Scan Now button

* If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
* It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a few minutes)

When the download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan.

When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save report and save it to a convenient location (activescan.txt to desktop).

Please post the contents of the ActiveScan report in your reply.

Thanks,
tea

Hi Don,

Thanks for that. :) Panda doesn't clean, unless it's a virus, so let's go to the Dr. and see what he has to say.

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Thanks,
tea
