I'm new to the board because I've got Winhound on my computer and can't get rid of it. I've read some of the other users' posts and have installed HijackThis and saved the log. Will someone please review it and tell me what to do next? This is all Greek to me. Thanks!

hi smnyc1,

first we will use hjt, then boot to SAFE MODE, then get a download or two.

before you start disconnect from the internet. this means uplug your modem.

i would print this out or copy it to a txt file so you can get to it.

make sure files will show:

FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok

unplug modem:
scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.

now reboot computer into SAFE MODE, you reach safe mode by tapping the f8 key during a restart. chose the safe mode option, once you reach the safe mode desktop, using explorer look for and delete these files:

intell32.exe located here>>C:\WINDOWS\system32
do a search and see if you can locate and delete links.exe
delete entire WinHound folder located here>>C:\Program Files\WinHound

also while in safe mode run your antivirus software.

plug modem back in, reboot computer once then:

if you hvaent already go out and grab these 3 apps:

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Spybot Search and destroy:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

1. Download Ewido and install
Ewido Security Suite. It is a free trial version of the program:

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

2. Install ewido security suite
3. Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
4. The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

1. On the left hand side of the main screen click update
2. Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use Ewido manual updates


Once the updates are installed do the following:

1. Click on scanner
2. Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
3. NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
o If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
o DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
o If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
4. Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
5. Click Save report.
6. Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.

Click Start>Run then type %temp%
Hit OK. Delete all the files you can.

Empty your Temp folders. Go to Start > Run and type:cleanmgr. Windows will scan. When done check these 3 and press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

click start->settings->control panel->internet options->programs tab->RESET WEB SETTINGS
