View Full Version : Can't download/install/run any anti virus...

sgregg3
2007-01-02, 23:01
When downloading or installing any software trials (anti-virus only), the download always freezes initially. When re-started, the download completes and installs. This also happens when anti-virus is installed from a cd...the initial install is ok, however, I get a freeze when downloading updated virus definitions.

This only happens on 1 pc which leads me to believe there's something "bad" going on with it.

HELP!

Hi sgregg3 and welcome to the Forums :)

Please post a HijackThis log to here: Click here (http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HijackThis.exe) to download HijackThis.exe
Save HijackThis.exe to your desktop.
Create a new folder named HijackThis to your desktop. Move Hijackthis.exe into that folder.
Run HijackThis.exe
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Ok nothing bad in the Kaspersky log...

You seem to have parts from Symantec/Norton running. It may be blcking the installation of a new antivirus.

Then you seem to have this VIRIT antivirus installed. This can also be the reason why the new antiviruses aren't installing. Running 2 or more antiviruses at the same time isn't recommended and this is also why they usually won't install to the computer that already ha an antivirus.

So you have uninstalled Norton right ?
What about this VIRIT antivirus, hae you uninstalled it too ?

Let me know :bigthumb:

sgregg3
2007-01-04, 20:09
i understand the A/V conflicts, but norton was (should've ben) uninstalled using their removal tool. any suggestions for a "complete" removal??

VirIT is freeware I used recently to see if it found anything. I purchased McAfee and will re-install once norton is gone.

Also, as I'm typing this email my taskbar toggles between the normal XP (blue) interface to a win95 (silver) interface and then the system froze????

Last, what am I to do with the download of the ATF cleaner??

Thanks for all the help!!!

Mr_JAk3

Ok we can take the leftover out manually.

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

Disable a service
Start
Run
Type services.msc to the field and press enter.
A window opens, scroll down to Symantec Core LC
Rightclick it and choose Stop
Then choose Properties
Set Startup to Disabled
Click Apply and OK.
Then, open HijackThis.
Open the Misc Tools section
Delete an NT service
Copy the following line to the box and press OK; Symantec Core LC
Answer Yes
Close HIjackThis

Restart the computer.

Delete the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared

Run ATF Cleaner Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Then you should uninstall this VirIT before installing McAfee. But please do this at offline mode. Otherwise you computer will be unprotected during the installation.

Does yo computer freeze often ? Has that happened before ?

sgregg3
2007-01-05, 14:58
This is the 2nd time it's frozen. It just began doing this a week or so ago, which is what caused the concern of a virus.

Also, you gave directions for Firefox & Opera browser, but I use IE7. I assume the directions would be the same.

Click IE at the top and choose: SELECT ALL
Click the EMPTY SELECTED button.

Mr_JAk3
2007-01-05, 20:00
Yes that was ok with ATF Cleaner.

Were you able to install McAfee ?

sgregg3
2007-01-06, 00:18
McAfee's installed!!

Quick question...I had my USB drives disconnected during the Kaspersky scan. Should I run the Kasp. scan again with them connected or will McAfee suffice?

Mr_JAk3
2007-01-06, 09:04
Ok good :)

Any issues with the pc ?

No need for rerun with Kaspersky but I recommend that you run a full scan with McAfee.

sgregg3
2007-01-07, 23:17
Yeah one thing...

the explorer/task bar does the "toggle" as mentioned earlier and then the pc freezes. I have no idea what causes this?!?!?

FYI...I thought it may have had something to do with the new IE7, however, I just downloaded Firefox ver. 2.0 yesterday and the pc did it again today.

Mr_JAk3
2007-01-08, 15:47
Ok so still freezes...

Let's do a little more research :)

Make a new folder in the C:\drive called silentrunners
Download 'silent runners" from here: (direct download)
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.vbs
Save it to your silentrunners folder.

Click start> run> type cmd and hit enter
Type the following exactly and hit enter after each line.
cd c:\silentrunners and hit enter
"silent runners.vbs" -all and hit enter

Wait until it pops up saying its completed, then post the resulting logfile here
It will be very large. You may need several posts to include everything :bigthumb:

NOTE:

The "silentrunners" link you provided didn't execute as per your instructions. So I went to their website downloaded a .zip file, extracted the file into the "silentrunners" folder and ran it that way. Not sure if this would affect the results or not?!?!

Hi :)

A little more research...

Please run a GMER Rootkit scan:

Download GMER's application from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/GMER_d5198.html

Unzip it and start the GMER.exe
Click the Rootkit tab and click the Scan button.

Once done, click the Copy button.
This will copy the results to your clipboard.
Paste the results in your next reply.

Warning ! Please, do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.

Hi :)

GMER pointed out that you have some services from Kaspersky antivirus still running. So you've had Kaspersky once and uninstalled it ?

The leftovers may conflict with McAfee and others and cause the freezing. We'll clean those...

Generate a HijackThis Startup list:
Open HijackThis: Click on "Open the Misc Tools Section"
Check the following boxes to the right of "Generate StartupList Log": List also minor sections (Full)
List empty sections (Complete)
Click "Generate StartupListLog"
Click "Yes" at the prompt.
A Notepad window will open with the contents of the HijackThis Startup list displayed
Copy & Paste that log to here

You may need to use several messages so that you can post everything. :bigthumb:

Yes...Kaspersky was used in the past, however, it was/should've been "uninstalled" over a year ago.

Hi good work :)

OK let's get rid of Kaspersky leftovers...

Please download the KisKav6Remove.zip (ftp://ftp.kaspersky.ru/utils/KIS6/REMOVER/KisKav6Remove.zip)
to your desktop. Unzip all the contents to eg C:\KavRemover folder.

Restart the computer to the safe mode.
Go to the C:\KavRemover folder and run the file "avp_remove.cmd"

Reboot to the normal mode.

Let me know how the pc is running :bigthumb:

Question: Why do I now get a windows security alert?? I have McAfee installed and running? Should I uninstall and re-install??

Mr_JAk3
2007-01-12, 21:11
Hi again :)

That's good news. Is Windows Security Center still giving warnings or was it just temporary ?
Did you reboot and see if the message is gone ?

McAfee seemed to be running fine....

You can remove the tools we used.

Then you should update your Java to the latest version (6.0) Start
Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs
Delete the old Java, J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Install it

Yep...it's me again. I continue to have the problem with the pc freezing.

This time it happened after I uninstalled Spybot. I was going to re-install to hopefully resolve an error I had been receiving....sorry, but I don't recall what it said. While removing Spytbot, I was asked to reboot the pc inorder to complete the uninstall of Spybot.

When the system restarted, I got online to download Spybot and Firefox couldn't find a connection. When I would click on my broadband connection, the "connection properties" screen would flash, but not open. All the while, my taskbar is still switching colors...silver to blue and back again?!?!?!?

Once I completed all of your above recommended steps, I was going to create a new system restore point. However, I'm not sure if I should do that just yet.

Hi :)

Do these freezes happen regularly, when you try to do something spesific ?

Could be a physical problem, let's check that the pc isn't too hot...

Please download and install this Everest home edition 2.2 (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html) to your pc.
Reboot.

Then use your computer normally for like and half an hour.
Then open Everest. From the left hand side menu choose:
Computer -> Censor

Rigthclick the right side window and choose Copy All.
Then paste the info to this thread :bigthumb:

"Your application was unable to locate framedyn.dll".

Spybot still opens and runs, but what's causing this error???

Hi :)

Ok the framedyn.dll might be corrupted. Let's try this.

Go to:
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\framedyn.dll

Hold down the right mouse button on framedyn.dll and drag it to the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Release the mouse. A menu will appear. Click copy. It will ask if youwant to overwrite the current copy. Say yes.

Restart the computer and try to run Spybot again. Do you still get that error ?
