Hey folks, I just registered today because of this bug. It is a genuine pain!
A lil' background first: I am on dial-up, AOL, I like to play FPS games, and my wife likes to surf. We have both been getting unsolicited email like mad. I think it came from that or a website one of us has been to. Anyhow, I searched for several hours trying to find this thing using Norton AV, MS AntiSpyware Beta, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, Easycleaner, Xcleaner, HiJackThis, and I run SpywareBlaster to boot. I finally went searching on the web and this is what I came up with:
http://malwareremoval.com/plog/index.php?op=ViewArticle&articleId=48&blogId=3
I strongley recommend you READ ALL of this webpage and then proceed. You have to DL SpyAxeFix.exe to your desktop, reboot to safe mode (F8 when starting windows) and run the MS-DOS batch file (it is all self explanitory) in each user account (must have admin rights to do this and it cures the toolbar.) Then reboot to safe mode again and go to start-run-regedit and delete the mssearch.exe file installed in the Windows/system32 folder (this cures the pop-ups.) Then finally to get my IE home page back (I checked it after reading how many people were being redirected) I simply ran a system restore to a few days prior to infection, and for 3 days now I have had no issues whatsoever.
If anything changes for me I will post back here to say that it's back (hopefully this will not occur.):band:

Then reboot to safe mode again and go to start-run-regedit and delete the mssearch.exe file installed in the Windows/system32 I wouldn't suggest anyone do anything in the registry unless instructed to by someone who knows what they are doing. One mistake and you can kill your PC.

Agreed, but this was the only way I could find to fix the pop-up problem. I would love to know of a better way, but it was the only one I found. If you guys find a more simple way of curing it, let me know. That was the only file I removed, I let the program take care of the rest. Thanks, I don't want anyone to fry their system.
BTW did you look at the DL I spoke of? If so, what is your opinion, I only want to help get rid this problem because apparently a lot of people are getting it.:bigthumb:

BTW did you look at the DL I spoke of? Yes, and it looks like a few still had problems after following what was posted. There can be additional bad guys with that infection and some hidden files.

Do you have a HJT log? If not:

Please download this self extracting file to your My Downloads folder or My Received Files (dependent on your Operating System):

http://www.forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=112

Click the "Save" button.

Navigate to My Documents>Chose My Downloads or My Received Files folder once inside that folder click "Save".

Now go to the folder you saved HijackThis_sfx.exe in.

Double click HijackThis_sfx.exe and select Unzip. When done click "OK".
Close the WinZip self Extractor window.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here [Submit Reply].

I almost forgot to add this was made during infection, do you want another for post infection? I think this was after i had ran the initial SpyAxeFix.exe. I think I understand what your saying though, I had Smitfraud.C come up on my SpyBot scan, and the 3rd time I ran it, it was gone.

See if these are on your PC.

Open C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.dll <--- Delete file: Be very careful with the spelling of this file

delete this folder if listed:

I think it will be in C:\WINDOWS\system32

Hey guys, I thank you. I've been looking through some of the other forums, and this thing looks to be a massive problem. It also looks like it's coming from porn sites too. Anyway, I have reset all the browser settings for AOL, NetZero (which I don't recommend anyone use), and IE for more suitable content, and what little bit of rear my better half has left is surfing more appropriate sites. I check the temp and history folders regularly to make sure no attempts have been made to visit any "adult" sites. She said it was a curiosity thing, which so far has been true, but if you're gonna surf through that junk, you WILL get something.:ninja:
