View Full Version : SmitFraud,Command, and Bar888
I downloaded some files on the internet, and now my computer is running very slow and random pop-ups are appearing. When trying to run command promt I get an error stating "Another program is currently using the file" I downloaded Spybot to try and fix the problem. Most problems found are removed, however one in particular keeps reappearing.
Bar888 and smitfraud are the two which go away temporarily. I deleted registry keys associated with Bar888, but it still comes back.
How can I get this off and how can I stop it happening again in the future?
I am going to be more careful with my downloads. I recently removed Azureus and Limewire which were acting up a bit.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Doug
(I checked a few threads on this forum, but they confused me and were a bit different than my case.

Hi, welcome to Safer Networking Forums!
*Click HERE (http://ralphcaddell.com/Uploads/HjThis.exe) to download a self-extracting version of Hijackthis. Double click on the file, by default it will extract itself to C:\Hijackthis
Next, double click on Hijackthis.exe. Click "Scan System and Save a Logfile." A Notepad will appear in your screen, copy and paste the contents of the notepad to your next reply.
*Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options except for Option # 1.
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm (http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm)
If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.
please post a fresh HijackThis log along with the smitfraudfix log.
Here is the Hijackthis log file:

As for Smitfraud fix.... I could not get it to run. Even when i put Smitfraudfix into my root directory. When I tried to run the program an error message appeared saying "Another program is currently using this file." I tried multiple times and kept getting the same error message. This message is the same one i get when trying to use the command prompt.

Hi, I have bad news:sad:
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files without your knowledge.
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:
How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063)
However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.
Thank you for your help. I suspected as much and the infected computer has been disconnected from the internet for awhile now. I have wanted to upgrade the computer to XP and now is a perfect time. I will go ahead and reformat the drive and install XP.
Thanks for the help :bigthumb:

You're Welcome.
Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your pc's security.
Antivirus
» Avast! (http://www.asw.cz/eng/avast_4_home.html)
» AVG AntiVirus (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free)
» AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/)
Firewall Application - Although Windows Xp comes with a firewall, you should not rely on it because the Windows Firewall can only filter incoming data; outgoing traffic is not controlled, meaning that malware/viruses that are present in your computer can access the internet with no restrictions. There are several other Firewall that can protect you better by filtering incoming and outgoing data. Make sure you get only one of these.
» ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com)
» Kerio (http://http//www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)

Note: Make sure you update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
