I'm pretty frustrated right now as I've noticed over the past couple days a yellow triangle on my taskbar with a popup that says I need to click on the triangle to fix the problem. At first I almost thought it was an authentic issue, but then realized it wasn't. However, I'm having a difficult time trying to get rid of it. I read another post who seems to be having the same issue that I am, however, I don't know how to "Hijackthis log". I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do first. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :D:
:bigthumb:

Thank you in advance.

Amber

Hello and sorry for the wait.

If you have not resolved the problem, we do have this sticky topic:

If you have waited four days for advice post here. (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?p=4836#post4836)

Hello Amber, I apologize for the delay, I have looked several times and was not 100% sure how to proceed, but it appears the other helpers are busy. I will do my very best to get you cleaned up. Here is what I need from you to start.

1) If you have not read and followed all of these instructions, please do so:
"BEFORE you POST" -Preliminary Steps
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
Once reason I am asking is because it looks like your HJT log is formatted. Please open Notepad and click on "Format" at the top. If "Word Wrap" is checked, please uncheck it for the duration of the cleanup.

2) If you looked at your anti-virus scan results you can see all of those junk cookies you are storing. So we do not have to look at them again, please delete all cookies now.
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE: Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
Click the "Delete Cookies" button
Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed): Go to Tools > Options.
Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

3) We may have a Smitfraud information, this will tell us:
Download Smitfraudfix from here: http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php and follow these directions only:
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note:
process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Use "Post Reply" to stay in this topic. Post that report from Smitfraudfix and a new unformatted HJT log. I will respond with directions as soon as possible after that. Please add any comments you think will help, and if your issue is resolved, post and let me know so I can close your topic.

Thanks

The past couple days, my computer has started freezing, and the only way to shut it down is manually by holding the button down for several seconds. I don't know if it's related to the other problem with Ultimate Defender or not. The word wrap on Notepad is unchecked, and I'm sorry if it's difficult to read. Thank you for responding and helping me clean my computer. It's been very frustrasting! I don't know if this means anything, but this file "C:\WINDOWS\system32\zknopmte.exe" is an unknown and fairly new, noticed around the time I started having problems. I don't know if it helps you or not. Please let me know if there are any other logs or anything else you would like me to post to get rid of whatever is happening to my system. Thank you again!

Amber

Thanks Amber, you do have the Smitfraud infection. I would suggest you stay offline as much as possible, the junk will download more if it can. Let's remove that infection like this: Here is a Tutorial if it helps.

1) Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) CA Pest Patrol Realtime Protection Service <<< this program may block changes we must make, you may have to turn it off until you finish.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Hi,

I did as you asked, the only thing left to do is update my java program, which I'm actually in the process of doing now. The files listed below were not showing when I redid the HiJackThis scan. I'm assuming they were removed during other cleanings? Also, once my system is clean, should I make a restore point? In response to the C:\GV250 files, yes, I am sure they are safe. Thank you so much for your help. I hope this is the end of this nasty pain in the rear problem! :)

Thanks for that feedback, the HJT log looks to be clean of malware and once you get Java updated you should be good to go. You have a lot of
016 - DPF: (Downloaded Program Files) Take a look at them one by one to make sure nothing is there that you do not use and know is safe. That will save me from having to research all of those. If you see any that should not be there or you no longer need, use HJT to remove them.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

I don't know if it's related to what I had on my system previously or not, but my computer still freezes up and IE is adding taps for homepages and changing tabs that I had for homepages to the last viewed item. I have gone through my add/remove software and removed some items, not many, of what I wasn't using at the present time. Please let me know what you want to see and I will get you those logs. Thank you.

Amber, post a new HJT log so I can see if some new malware has gotten in. Are you receiving any message from Windows?...if so, post them "word for word".

Thanks

Please turn "word wrap" under "Format" in Notepad off when you are posting logs. Formatted they are much harder to work with...thanks.

Amber, nothing jumps out at me as malware, but you have a lot of stuff I do not recognize, especially the Downloaded Program Files I asked you to look at. I suggest you look again, if you keep downloading and downloading sooner or later something is going to confleict and cause problems. At times I just remove all of those 016 items, they are ActiveX plugins and are returned the next time you visit the site.

I also do not know if the problem is even malware, many things can cause a computer to freeze up and it is not usually malware. Are you receiving any error messages? If so post them "word for word".

I am going to suggest you run a diagnostic on the computer here: http://pcpitstop.com/ You don't even have to register, but I suggest you do because they store your records and remember you when you return. Run a complete diagnostic following all directions and post a link to your test results here for me to see. I may spot something in it.

For the IE7 issue, you may have to uninstall it and intall it again. Microsoft will give you help with this a couple of times, here is the information:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx
Internet Explorer 7 phone support
Consumers only:
Unlimited support for Internet Explorer 7 installation and download issues is available via the phone at no charge based on your locale until November 1, 2007. Customers must be running Windows XP Service Pack 2 in a non domain environment. This means that if you're running Internet Explorer 7 in a corporate enterprise environment, we cannot offer you phone support at this time.

Support number: 1-866-234-6020

Hours of operation:
Monday-Friday 5 am - 9 pm Pacific Standard Time
Saturday-Sunday 6 am - 3 pm Pacific Standard Time

I also will mention that MicroWorld Free AntiVirus Toolkit Utility (MWAV) is offering a free scan and clean (normally they just scan) if you would like to run a deep scan looking for hidden malware. Follow the direction, there is no download, see if you can post the results for me to view. I need the information in the bottom pane only.

Thanks

If "word wrap" is supposed to be unchecked, then it is. If it is supposed to have a check mark by it, then I apologize for misunderstanding what I was supposed to do. I'm sorry either way if it's difficult for you to read.

Here is the link for the rest results from pcpitstop---http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/Summary.asp?TechExpress=E0ZUFW3ZY7WSJPZJ

I was able to get a log for MWAV but it is extremely long, so I'm not sure if I should post it or do it as an attachment. I noticed that after doing the MWAV, it deleted my folder that hijackthis was in and some other files as well. I will re-download for hijackthis. Please let me know what you would like me to do next, and thank you for helping me through this.

I apologize, I will have to run MWAV on my computer to refresh my memory. Normally it will only do a scan and only the bottom pane shows items MWAV suggest are probably malware. Only during this trial period is it removing the bad stuff and there must be an opportunity for you to choose if you want the stuff removed or not? If you still have the log, look at the very bottom and post the information from that bottom pane for me to view if possible, if not do not be concerned. I am sorry it removed HJT, must have spotted it as a threat when it is surely not.

I revieved your information here:
http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/Summary.asp?TechExpress=E0ZUFW3ZY7WSJPZJ
and I see nothing but the minor problem in Internet. Click the word and follow the directions to fix that issue. Complete any other instruction I posted above and let me know how it goes with Microsoft IE support. I will keep your topic open for a few days, keep me posted.

Thanks

Sorry I haven't updated in a while, my computer has completely crashed and I'm using one at school. I'm contacting some people to take a look to see what they can do. Thanks for your help at this point.
