View Full Version : Protection Bar removed

Dear forum,

I removed succesfully the "protection bar" that hijacked my IE using your advice on http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=4015 :bigthumb:
The hijacker blocked my explorer home page (switching automatically to its own). It also showed an extra IE bar that could not be removed by de-checking. Also some files were placed on the desktop.
My earlier attempts to remove were unsuccesful (deleting software, updating registry etc).
The malware was placed by me responding to a security alert, that I thought was coming from Norton.
Thanks!!

Welcome to the forum, it looks like Smitfraudfix did the job:bigthumb: How is the computer running? Let's do a little cleaning then you can let me know if we should run additional scans for malware.

http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=1925 <<< tutorial for ATF-Cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O21 - SSODL: carbinyl - {8d8c2387-7f80-4022-9be6-43630a969558} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gwquvw.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

See this information: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\ <<< out of date, download the newest version and uninstall all old versions of Java in Add Remove Programs.

If all is running well, then you are good to go, let's finish by cleaning the Systen Restore files.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
