View Full Version : Spyware and general sloth
Hi there,
A message from Anne.
I'm new here and glad for the opp. to get help for my comp. trouble.
I have three computers, and shall start threads for each.
The aim is to switch to Windows SP2 with clean computers.
Here's the first, and I reckon the cleanest.
I regularly scan it with different programs, but it is slow and I don't trust it.
Unfortunately, I'm not well versed in computer security...
Thanks in advance, Anne
Here's the HiJackThis log. Below that, the Panda log.

Hello Anne and welcome to the forum, I see nothing of any malware in this HJT log. I do see a slightly out of date Java program, update that right away. See this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
I do see AVG Anti-Spyware running, do you own this program? If not, it is using a lot of resources and should be turned off or at least stopped from running.
Since you have it, lets update and run it using the instructions in this link:
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165
Make sure to delete or quarantine what it finds, it will probably clean what Panda would not. Post the scan results and a new HJT log created after AVG AS has run and you have restated the computer so the changes go into effect.
Besides the resources AVG AS is using, here are links to information that may help with speed and security:

If you intend to post logs from additional computers, create New Threads (topics) for each one to avoid confusion.
Hi, Anne again, a lot more desperate this time....
Followed instructions:
-removed old Java's and installed 6.0.
-updated and ran AVG.
It found 2 items and I clicked "take all actions" or something.
It then asked me if I wanted to quarantine a whole section of whatever.
Since the malware carried high risk and would, they said, "open the door to backdoor malware", I clicked yes.
I wasn't really paying attention to what it would quarantine, since I was saving the logfile to post later.
Now, my computer won't start up anymore.
It doesn't go beyond three lines of its startup.
I'm afraid the quarantine was for some vital piece of the startup process?
No idea what to do now...
This was the cleanest computer, bugger that!
Hope to get help asap... Thanks!
Anne

Hello Anne, this programm is used a lot and I have not heard of this happening. Let's take a hard look at what was removed so we can find out what happened. These instructions will return what was placed in quarantine to your computer. Follow the instructions carefully please.
HOW TO RESTORE FILES FROM QUARANTINE:
1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware and click the "Infections" button.
2. Click the "Quarantine" tab and highlight the file(s) you want to restore.
3. Click "Restore".
Please post the information in that quarantine folder before you restore it to your computer. I would like to see if AVG removed any valid files.
Thanks
Hi there,
Thanks for your quick reply.
I'm sorry if I don't understand how I can retrieve stuff if my computer won't start up? I just tried again, it doesn't continue its startup after only three lines... I tried tapping F8 for a Safe Mode, but the computer doesn't respond.
How can I restore?

Here are some possible solutions:
http://www.ehow.com/how_113600_troubleshoot-computer-wont.html
http://kb.iu.edu/data/aelm.html
http://ezinearticles.com/?What-To-Do-When-Windows-Wont-Boot&id=16309
Hi!
Your links helped, though in unexpected ways.
When I inserted the Windows CD, I discovered someone had, in my absence, plugged in their phone/USB and that was stalling the startup.
It's working fine and dandy now!
Below, the logs for AVG and HijackThis.
Hope all is well with this computer now - would appreciate your feedback...
Thanks,
Anne
First AVG run:
---------------------------------------------------------
AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report
---------------------------------------------------------
+ Created at: 18:31:26 12-1-2007
+ Scan result:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{781AD5A7-3D6D-4299-92FA-B23D459E418E}\RP382\A0070697.exe/sponsor.exe -> Downloader.Swizzor.ag : No action taken.
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{781AD5A7-3D6D-4299-92FA-B23D459E418E}\RP382\A0070698.exe/sponsor.exe -> Downloader.Swizzor.ag : No action taken.
:mozilla.445:C:\Documents and Settings\Werkkamer\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ees9h1w6.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Co : No action taken.
::Report end
Because I had accidentally not quarantined one part, I ran it a second time:
---------------------------------------------------------
AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report
---------------------------------------------------------
+ Created at: 19:44:37 12-1-2007
+ Scan result:

::Report end
Then restarted and ran HiJack This, here's the log:

Not seeing and malware in the HJT log. The AVG AS scan shows a cookie and infection backed up in your System Restore files which we will clean. We do have a major issue though, you appear to be running two antivirus programs at the same time.
C:\Program Files\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avgnt.exe
C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe
See what is said about that in these links:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html
Uninstall one of those and if you need to post a HJT log so I can be sure you have removed one completely, please do so.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam
AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Hi there,
Thanks again for all your tips.
I uninstalled Norton (subscription ends today) and kept Antivir.
Any thoughts on that decision?
Followed instructions about System Restore.
Then made HiJackThis log, see below, for final check.
I have one more question.
The reason I did not switch to SP2 when it came out, was it destabilized and blocked the home network. It just wouldn't run with SP2. Obviously, I'm worried that this might happen again. Have you heard of this problem, and would you know how to avoid it?
Thanks,
Anne

Hello Anne, let me try to give you answers to your questions first, since I see work left to do in the HJT log.
I am not a big fan of Norton/Symantec, but more important than the program is how it is maintained. Keep Antivir updated (auto updates if available) and run it on a regular basis. I suggest you run a couple of free online scans at least once a month to help your resident program.
SP1...now this is a problem. You know Microsoft stopped supporting the Service Pack and without the Critical Updates it is just unsafe to take the computer online. I would get with Microsoft support and do whatever you had to to get SP2 on your computer.
http://support.microsoft.com/ I see your Google is set to the Netherlands, if you are there and also speak Dutch, look to this forum for possible help: http://www.pchelper.nl/
Once SP2 is in place, I would also download IE7 as soon as possible for the addition safety it affords:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx?mg_id=10017
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx
Have you heard of this problem, and would you know how to avoid it?
I have not, where exactly are you located? I may be able to refer you to a forum that can help if the issue occurs. One way or another, the Critical Updates are to important to do without.
On to the HJT log, you have many of the Symantec/Norton programs still running in Services and also in running programs. I also see AVG Anti-Spyware still running. I do not know how long it has been on your computer but once the trial periods is over it will afford no realtime protection and there is no good reason to allow it to run and use resources. Here is what I see in your HJT log and this link will help you on all computers:
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
These are the items in the log I have issue with, and I won't mention AVG Anti-Spyware again, you know what to do with it.
C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Logitech Desktop Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LDMConf.exe
If you do not use Desktop Messenger and few know it is even there, it got installed along with another Logitech product because the EULA was not read. At the least it is a resource waster, I would uninstall ONLY Desktop Messenger in Add Remove programs.
(I suggest you use HJT to remove these, you can always download them again if you need them)

Symantec/Norton services you are running. Unless you know of some service they will provide unpaid (I know of none) you need to at least disable these services.
Here is a fairly simple tutorial and I suggest you disable only these services unless you are positive you know what you are doing. I am highliting those service in red.

Hi Phil,
Tnx for your to-do list, and here's an update.
• I checked all the Startup items, disabled about 2/3 of them using the link you provided and luckily did not find any malware in that list
• I removed LiveUpdate via the Add/Remove software.
After that, LiveUpdate elements no longer visible in the Services Menu.
• I used said Services Menu to disable Symantec Internet Security Password… and I switched AVG to manual (I’m actually thinking of buying).
• The 4 remaining items (Symantec & Logitech) I removed with HijackThis.
Then restarted the computer. It told me I had changed the way Windows started up and it would keep reminding me of this in order to give me a chance of rehabilitation ;) . Do I need that?
Also, Windows told me it had recovered from a serious error, a stop error. The instruction was to reboot, which I did. This time, no serious error.
I ran HJT, results for final check below.
I posted my question about SP2 and networking on the forum you suggested. I noticed they have several stickies about SP2 related problems, which obviously I can’t cook soup of, if you see what I mean, but I’m sure they can help me there, thanks for the tip!
BTW, I posted about my second computer at
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=10444
If you start on that, do disregard the first post, it was useless I think...
Thanks for all the help so far! :present:

Good morning Anne, trying to give you answers:
and I switched AVG to manual (I’m actually thinking of buying).
I put it on my sister's new computer, but I used the free version. To my knowledge that is the same as the paid version less tech support. When was the last time you got any real help from tech support at an AV company? If you do purchase, watch for an update from 7.1 to AVG Anti-Virus 7.5 which is in the process of occuring.
MSConfig: seems Bill Gates wants you to run it all so you can kill the computer in a couple of years and have to buy a new one with a new Operating System (guess who get's that money?) Tell that popup from MSConfig not to bother you again. Since it is your computer you certainly should have the right to decide which of your programs you want to load at startup and which one you might start on occaision in All Programs...right!!
Also, Windows told me it had recovered from a serious error, a stop error. The instruction was to reboot, which I did. This time, no serious error. To Windows (and Bill again) all errors are serious one. If you receive it again, get the exact words and copy/paste those into Google. Most every time Google will have an answer for you.
BTW, I posted about my second computer at
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=10444
If you start on that, do disregard the first post, it was useless I think...I hope you received my PM about this. If not go to your Private Messages. User CP > PM's on the left and review the information. I am not sure who will help you? I have limited volunteer time for the next several days but all helpers here are super qualified to help.
You current HJT log looks fine...safe surfing to you and be careful, it is a cyber-jungle out there.
Thanks...Phil
Hi Phil,
Sorry, I have one last question.
I saw in another topic that AVG was listed with the Antivirus software, rather than spyware. Does this mean I choose between Antivir and AVG? Cause I thought they were complementary and meant to keep them both.
Thanks for your tip on buying AVG!
Anne

Grisoft has both a antivirus product and a antispyware product. Do not confuse them, they perform different functions:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 <<< see this information
Antivir also has a line of products that perform different functions. Some products are free and some are not.
http://www.free-av.com/
Google has much information comparing different software:

I hope this helps...Phil
