Hi there If you have any suggestions, please help me. I'm in some serious trouble and have no idea what to do next. My problem is as follows...

I'm running a pc which can boot into either XP or WIN2000. The problem is occuring on both OS. I'm on a broadband 512 connection. For about 2 weeks, my internet keeps cutting in and out and I can only open pages every 10-15 refreshes.

I'm almost certain my bandwidth is being stolen by a virus deep in my computer. After speaking to my ISP tech support 3 times, they confirmed it because an unusually high download was being made even when I had no applications/browsers open. Which leads me to my next step.

I ran my VET (etrust) antivirus and it found 7 virus'. All of which it deleted. I then ran Ad-aware, which found and removed a couple of spyware infections. I then ran Spybot, which found a few infections, all of which it could fix apart from 2 labelled as 'Smitfraud-C'. To remove these, I had to run hijackthis in safemode, replace the dlls, reboot and then fix using Spybot.

Problem still not solved.

I decided to run Zonealarm to see what exactly was happening. It showed that a whole lotta dll stuff was gaining access to the net. Even one called something like 'run dll as exe' Most disturbingly, recsl.exe and SERVICES.exe kept trying to gain access. I found something similar in a forum here suggesting to use the SDfix tool to sort it out. I followed step and it fixed recsl.

Only problem now is, I cant access the net at all now, SERVICES.exe is still trying to gain access and whenever I shutdown zonealarm, my antivirus will detect a different infection in C://WINNT/System32/

Please help me out here. I have no idea whats going on.

The following is the latest hijackthis log:

Hi EmmaK and welcome to the Forums :)

Sorry for the delay...

You got some infections there.

Create a new folder for HijackThis and move HijackThis.exe into it.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks for the advice. I've done what you suggested. I can't understand how everytime I connect to the net, my bandwidth is used by something hidden to download a whole bunch of virus'.

Just now, I've found 3 strange exe files in C:/ raxkkvo.exe, eimh.exe and aklrkeh.exe. Could these be infections? If so, how do i fix these?

The following is the log combofix produced:

Hi Mr_Jak3,

I've done all you said, only I couldn't find the z.exe. I think I remember a previous scan picking up and cleaning something like that. Anyway, here are my logs...

For some reason, the forum text wont let me paste the AVG log, so it's attached as a txt file.

P.S
I notice that AVG picked up some baddies on D: (my winxp partition). I actually hate it and never use the OS, so I was considering formatting D: Do you think that by doing this, it could cause problems?

Hi again, it is looking clean now :)
The pc is running fine ?

Well AVG cleaned D-drive from infections. You may format the D-drive if you want because the 2000 is installed to C-drive.

Then the first priority is to visit Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and get your system updated
-> Install all important updates
(NOTE: You'll may have to reboot and get back to the update several times before all of them are installed)

Now you can clean AVG's Quarantine:
Open AVG Anti-Spyware
Click Infections
Click Quarantine tab
Click Select all
Click Remove finally
Close the program
You can remove the tools we used.

Then you should update your Java to the latest version (6.0) Start
Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs
Delete the old Java, J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Install it

Now you can make your hidden files hidden again.
Go to My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Click the View tab.
Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
Check "Hide protected operating system files"
Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.

=============

Now that you seem to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Use ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1)
Download and install ATF Cleaner. Clean your temporary files & folders with it regularly.

Use Ad-Aware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48)
Download and install Ad-Aware. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Use AVG Anti-Spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/)
Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Use Spybot S&D (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=43)
Download and install Spybot S&D. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Install SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.

Install MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.

Use Firefox browser (http://www.mozilla.org)
Firefox is faster, safer and better browser than Internet Explorer.

Keep your systen up-to-date (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
Visit Windows Update regularly.

Keep your antivirus and firewall up-to-date
Scan your computer regularly with your antivirus.

Read this article by TonyKlein (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Stand Up and Be Counted ! (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php)
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Stay clean and be safe ;)
