View Full Version : Cannot Access system32 folder. Please help!

This has been bothering me immensely. AVG doesn't fix anything, the computer simply restarts each time the c:\windows\system32 folder is opened or accessed. Also, each time I try to access Firefox, my system reboots--I can access newtwork resources, just not through a web browser.

I was able to remove 14 "serious threats" using AVG spyware removal, which were located in the system information folder under C:\windows\. The problem still exists.

Also, each time the reboot occurs the item "dumprep -0 k" located at "%system root%/system32/dumprep -0 k" re-appears in msconfig's starup.

Any help is very appreciated. Here, first, is my blacklight log:

Welcome the time forum, you have a very nasty one here and I need to give you this information:
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Broadband Reports.com

One or more of the identified infections steal information. If this system is used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately by using a different computer (not the infected one!) to make the changes. Banking and credit card institutions, if any, should be notified of the possible security breech. I suggest that you read this article too:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

Here is the trojan and information about it:
O23 - Service: Microsoft authenticate service (MsaSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msasvc.exe (file missing)
http://www.castlecops.com/o23list-2222.html
http://virusinfo.prevx.com/viruscenter.asp?GRP=4748300015

If you decide to clean the trojan, Prevx gives you a free trial and will clean it for you. Once it has been removed, post a new HJT log and I will clean other junk I see.

Thanks

Thank you for your response!

I've taken some additional steps since my initial post. The most important being that I rebooted, hit F8 and started windows with "Last known working configuration" because my Safe Mode was not working. Since then I've been able to access the internet, and scan my system32 folders. I've used several anti-virus and anti-spyware progs. AVG found kernelex1.exe in the system32 folder and I erased it. I'm guessing this was one source of trouble. There were a bunch of other trojans that were eliminated as well. Also, I changed, in the registery, the browser load page and start page; both from "secure32.html" to "about:blank."

If you would like the logs from the viruses/trojans I've removed, please let me know. I used bitdefender, avg anti-spy and anti-virus, prevx1, and combofix.exe.

Understanding that there is no way this computer can be guaranteed to be safe, are you saying you want me to help you clean the best I can? If that is the cast, I need to know the results of the Prevx scan, was it able to remove this trojan? C:\WINDOWS\system32\msasvc.exe

That being the case I need to know what this is:
O23 - Service: HFUI - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\HFUI.exe (file missing)
a google on the file returns nothing.

I need to know what this is, did you install this service?
O23 - Service: WN - Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com - C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WN.exe

and you need to know this is still in your HJT log:
O23 - Service: Microsoft authenticate service (MsaSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msasvc.exe (file missing)
If Prevx indicated it removed this trojan, then you can try this:

Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Microsoft authenticate service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Delete the offending Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type (MsaSvc) and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

Post a new HJT log at let me know what the other two items are, here are free online scans if you need to scan the files:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

I ran Pervx and it detected a virus, but made no specific mention of msasvc.exe. I remember that was removed with my initial virus scan with AVG before my first post. I hasn't appeared in any anti-virus/spyware utility since.

As for the other progs:

I am not sure what program HFUI.exe is referring to.

Sysinternals is a rootkit revealer. I opened and installed it from a .zip, that is why it is in the temp folder, i'm guessing.

I'm assuming msasvc.exe is gone, so I went ahead and followed the steps you provided me. I disabled the service. But I ran HijackThis again and "msasvc.exe (file missing" did not appear, so I did not delete the NT service--not knowing if I could've anyway.

Should I delete the service for FHUI.exe? it was in my temp folder and not sure I'd need it for anything if it wasn't directly installed somewhere else.

Please move HJT from that Temp folder to a permanent folder. I prefer this: C:\HJt\HijackThis.exe. Here are additional instructions:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial94.html
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX00.890\HijackThis.exe

As far as I can see this item was just installed in that Temp folder?
O23 - Service: HFUI - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\HFUI.exe (file missing)
I have no idea what it is nor does Google. Unless you scan the file to find out what is is, which is why I provided the online scanners, I will have to leave that up to you. If it was my computer and running from a Temp file I would get rid of it.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

4) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to HFUI and WN and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
O23 - Service: HFUI - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\HFUI.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: WN - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCAL SETTINGS~1\Temp\WN.exe (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Navigate to this Temp folder and delete all of the contents.
C:\DOCUMENTS & SETTINGS~1\ADMINISTRATOR~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ and delete the contents of the Temp folder in RED. While you are there, open the Temporary Internet Files folder and delete the contents of it. Please do not delete either folder, just the contents.

7) Follow the instructions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware. Update it first, then be sure to delete or at least quarantine anything it locates. Save the scan report to post!

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

9) Your Java program is out of date, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_07 <<< out of date, download the newest version and uninstall all old version in Add Remove programs.

Restart the computer and post the AVG Anti-Spyware scan report and a new HJT log.

Thanks

I've done everything you advised--Prevx said that it encountered malware trying to install itself, and thus began it's countdown until my trial period is over, yet nothing showed up on the scans except for cookies. did prevx get rid of it by itself?

here is my avg anti-spyware scan report:

Thanks for returning your information, here is some information to help you control those trash cookies:

Prevx may be giving false positives to get a purchase, your HJT log look clean of malware. I suggest you uninstall Prevx now, it uses a load of resources.

I suggest this about AVG Anti-Spyware: AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Please follow these instructions to clean your System Restore files:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
