Hi, I have been unable to complete searches recently due to what I belive is:

CoolWWWSearch.aboutblank

When ever I attepmt to run adaware, spybot, avg, ect. my computer gets a blue screen of death for a split second and restarts.

Now, the reason I think it is CoolWWWSearch.aboutblank that after having spybot and other programs crashing when attepmting to remove malware I decided to take a video of the screen and this was the last item to popup b4 the BSOD.

So here is my HJT log and if anybody is able to help it would be tops!

Cheers, Red.

Hello Red and welcome to the forum. You have a bit of a mess here, and I can see you are having problems with searches. I would still like to make sure you have read and understand these instructions.

"BEFORE you POST" -Preliminary Steps
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

I suggest you keep this computer offline as much as possible until we get it clean, this junk will attract more.

You have markers in the HJT log for both a Smitfraud infection and variant of Adware.Look2Me: http://www.castlecops.com/o20list-98.html
Let's rule those out first like this:

1) Download Smitfraudfix from here: http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php
Follow only these instructions:
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note:
process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

2) Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=7) to your desktop.
Close all windows before continuing.
Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
Your computer will then shutdown.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

If Look2Me-Destroyer does not reopen automatically, reboot and try again.
If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.
If you receive a runtime error '339' please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.
http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/images/lib/MSWINSCK.OCX

If for some reason Look2Me-Destroyer doesn't reopen check that task scheduler is running.
If it isnt you can use sc.exe to start it by doing the following:

Please click on start > run > and type: sc start schedule
Hit enter and let the DOS windows open and close. This is normal.

Post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix, C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis lo, that's a start. Use "Post Reply" to stay in the same topic.

Thanks

Hi, Wasnt able to get the Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to restart so not too sure what to do about that. Im quite sure that I wasnt able to run any of the online scanners as as soon as the find something my computer would crash and restart. I am close to backing up my data that I want/need and formatting my HD and reinstalling my system. Then dealing with any dramas that pop up. I could do with a fresh system.

Thanks for the feedback, I respect the fact you are considering a reformat. These infections like L2M are hard to remove without being able to run tools we use. You will have to make that call but until you do I can tell you Smitfraudfix found the infection. Follow these instructions to remove it:

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

HJT is the diagnostic tool that gives a picture at a certain point. Please be sure to reboot the computer so all changes you make go into effect before you create and post a HJT log.

I need some help on this one: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DNHlp32.exe look at at least the first two links in this Google:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-16,GGLG:en&q=DNHlp32%2eexe
The first says it is a backdoor trojan and the second Data Encryption Systems Ltd. If you know it is safe, fine, if not, use one or more of these free online scanners to find out what it is:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

I will proceed thinking it is a trojan and remove it in the instructions, if it is not, then pass over it in the instructions.

How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

WinPatrol: Will block the changes we must make, follow these instructions.
Right-click the running icon of Winpatrol in the system tray and choose exit. It will automatically restart at next boot.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(you can remove the two R1's that are HP redirects if you do not use them)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.gtrydaz.com/index.php
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DNHelper32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\DNHlp32.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: OemStartMenuData - C:\WINDOWS\

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\DNHlp32.exe <<< delete that file
Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the C:\Report.txt from Smitfraudfix, a new HJT log and your comments.

Your Java program is outdated, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_07\ <<< out of date, download the newest version and uninstall all old version in Add Remove Programs.

Thanks
