odd search results

I noticed recently that, after doing a search at google, I often get redirects. A search will result in relevant hits, but clicking on the links will lead to other search engines. These tend to be http://mf.lvseo. org/ , http://vk.thefeedonline. info/ , http://www.firesearch. sc/ , http://www.veryfastsearch. com/ or http://www.find. fm/ (in each case without the links broken). These new links sometimes do appear to show searches for the same term entered in google, but I decided not to follow any of the links to test where they go. A test did not get similar results from altavista or yahoo searches, although I thought that there had been similar results earlier this week.

Scans with Spybot SD (v. 1.4.0.3) :bigthumb: , AdAware (v. 6.2.0.236), AVG (v 7.1.0.406), Spywareblaster (v. 3.5.0.1), and Norton (v. 104.0.5.3). These do not pick up anything. I tried in safe mode too, but with the same results. An online scan with McAffe also came up negative. Does that basically look like a good set of protection?

When Google is effected like this it is often a Wareout infection. In this case, I see this item:

We also have this issue, and the conflictions often caused make troubleshooting other issues difficult:
You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly. Uninstall one, update the one you keep and run a complete system scan, post for me any item that can't be removed, the complete name and pathway.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Restart the computer and see how it's running. If that does not resolve the issue, the we must start looking for somehting more sinister and hidden. Post an antivirus scan as required in the "BEFORE you POST" instructions and a new HJT log showing the changes mentioned above. Please also make any comments you think will help.

I think that I did all requested at the the "BEFORE you POST" link. If not, please let me know.

I took care of Java, multimple AV, and the HJT suggestions over the weekend. I will miss AGV until our Norton subscription expires. The good news is that it appears that the redirect from Google searches is gone! At least a test using previously used search terms came up with normal results (i.e. genuine links).

I finally had time to run complete online scans. McAfee comes up with nothing. The Trend Micro Online Scan (from your list of online scans) came up with a few vulnerabilities, but XP Service Pack II appears to be the primary fix. (I can not copy and paste them.) Presumably you will recommend the Service Pack, yes?

ThanksI am embarrassed to admit this, but I am at a loss for saving a log file from http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/. It does not give me the option to save a log, and copy-and-pasting text and even right clicking are not possible. I guess that I could do screen shots, but I am not too sure how practical that would be. Would "(MS06-065)" and/or "Vulnerability in Windows Object Packager Could Allow Remote Code Execution (924496)" be useful if simply typed out and listed manually? Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? If there are any files in the information you are unsure of, search them here:

If any come back as bad, then delete them. You can also move them to the recycle bin (make sure it is not being bypassed) and let them set there for a few days them dump the trash.

The experts will make suggestions in the links I will post, but unless I am missing something, I see no active spyware program running on your computer. This is not an antivirus program or firewall. You may wish to consider this free program from Microsoft:

The HJT log looks clean of malware, unless you have a reason to continue looking for something that is probably not there, then finish up like this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
