View Full Version : Another Toolbar888 infestation

Hi,

There appears to be a lot of these around at the moment - I don't appear to have the full-blown malware but I keep being pointed towards websites which want me to buy virus detection software. I tried a solution that used a Symantec.Agent.B removal tool but it couldn't detect a virus. However, Spybot keeps finding a Registry key called MSSMGR and says that it's due to Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888.

I scanned using eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner and got the following:

Scan Results: 66952 files scanned. 1 virus was detected.

File Infection Status Path
ads_nl1[1].htm JS/Veemyfull!exploit cannot cure C:\Documents and Settings\Ian\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\C9U7OT63\

Hello zicoian,

Welcome to Safer Networking Forums :)

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop. Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it. Click the Scan for Vundo button. Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button. You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo. When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK. Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txtin your reply.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea

Hi tea,

I did what you said but I had another virus alert while downloading combofix after running Vundofix. As a result, after running combofix, I ran both Vundofix and combofix again. There isn't enough space to show the logs from the first runs so the logs are in the order:

Second Vundofix log
HiJackThis log
Second Combofix log (next post)

The MSSMGR registry entry keeps reappearing and "spurious" connection dialog boxes can appear when I'm not on the internet -as if the trojan wants to replace its missing components.

Thanks,
Zicoian.

Hello,

Looking better. :)

Please download, install, and update AVG Anti-Spyware (formerly Ewido) (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)

Load AVG Anti-Spyware and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Click the settings tab, then click "apply all actions" and choose clean (quarantine)
Close AVG. Do not run it yet.

Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {540B635B-F638-4AAD-9B34-338EEC86588C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnli.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7136302F-B3CD-4080-8BB0-B1FC3F85FBAB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvts.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7DA39570-5FD2-4f18-94B4-20730CB3F727} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jqkrmjcn.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C505F4FA-0AFD-4E83-B73E-5084E813154A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vturron.dll (file missing)
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE <---This is a resource hog!!
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winosz32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winosz32.dll

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".

Delete the following file, if present:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winosz32.dll

In Safe Mode, load AVG Anti-Spyware and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
Restart back into Normal Mode.

In your reply, please post the report from AVG and a new HijackThis log. Please also let me know how your computer is running. :)

Hi,

I ran Vundofix (which found some more new entries) and Combofix again before I did as you requested in your last reply. However, I was not allowed to delete winosz32.dll. The error said that it was either read-only or that it was running. I attempted to make the C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory and its contents writable but by the time I had navigated back to the dll, I still wasn't allowed to delete it (the directory was read-only again when I looked at it again). Can you think of a way to delete it? I think that the dll may always be running...

The logs you requested are shown below and you'll see that the O20 entry is still there. The MSSMGR registry entry has appeared agin since I started this entry (in Notepad before copying to the forum) and I fully expect to be infected fully again when I log on to the internet (i.e. I'll have to run Vundofix again).

The main problem, therefore, appears to be - how do I delete winosz32.dll?

Hello,

Thanks for the info....we'll get it. ;)

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Thanks,
tea

Hi,

When I downloaded SmitFraudFix, I was attacked again so I ran VundoFix and Combofix again before I ran the SmitfraudFix report.

I've also attached a HijackThis report from after running SmitfraudFix.

Would Killbox be any good in removing winosz32.dll or will SmitfraudFix do the trick?

Hello,

Yep, we'll killbox it. If you already have it, delete it and download a new one to make sure you have the latest.

1) Please download the Killbox (http://www.killbox.net/downloads/KillBox.exe).
Save it to the desktop and run it.

2) Select "Delete on Reboot", and then select "All files".

3) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winosz32.dll

4) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

5) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.
F-Secure Blacklight: https://europe.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there...
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
Post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Download Silent Runners.zip (http://tinyurl.com/8bmsr) and extract it to a new folder on your Desktop. Run the Silent Runners.vbs file. You will receive a prompt: "Do you want to skip supplementary searches?" - click "NO." If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow Silent Runners.vbs to run. This script is not malicious so please allow it. A text file will appear in the folder - it's not done, let it run. (It won't appear to be doing anything!) Once the "All Done!" prompt flashes up, open the text file, and copy & paste it in your next reply.

Thanks,
tea

Hi,

I did as you said (though Killbox didn't give me a Pending Operations prompt) and the results are below (Blacklight, Silent Runner and HijackThis logs, run in that order). Blacklight didn't queue any items for renaming.
I ran Spybot to remove the MSSMGR registry entry and (for the first time) it hasn't reappeared. The O20 HijackThis entry is still there but no .dll.

Hello,

Good, it worked.:bigthumb:

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winosz32 - winosz32.dll (file missing)

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".

Reboot ~

Your Java is way out of date, which leaves your computer vulnerable.

Updating Java Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp). Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications". Click the "Download" button to the right. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh. Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

In your reply, please post a new HijackThis log and let me know if the entry has stayed away. :)

Thanks,
tea

Hi,

Everything looks (and works) okay now, I think - unless you can see anything lurking in the HijackThis log below. There's not been any reappearance of the MSSMGR registry entry since yesterday and no hijack attempts.

I've installed JRE 6.0 after uninstalling the previous version of Java (1.5 Rel 5, or Java 5, I think). You said that this was way out of date but I only bought this new PC a couple of weeks ago and this version of Java was pre-installed...

I'm going to have to put plenty of new defences in place now and I'd appreciate it if you could give some guidance. I've seen Tony Klein's sticky article and advice that moderators have given other victims. My previous PC ran Windows Me and I was rather naive to think that an anti-virus (Avast) and firewall (ZoneAlarm) would be enough with the number of viruses and whatnot that target XP.

Hello,

Very glad to know everything is good. :bigthumb:
You said that this was way out of date but I only bought this new PC a couple of weeks ago and this version of Java was pre-installed... It was pre installed when that version of Java was up to date, so you had no way of knowing. ;) It's fixed now, so just make sure you manually check for updates in the future. This is one way to make your computer more secure.

This is my standard speech for prevention. You already employ some, but I'm leaving it complete in case you'd like to read some of the tutorials.

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

It is very important to maintain your Firewall.
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html).

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html).

SpywareGuard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html)
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial50.html).

Spybot-Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download)
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html). Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm)

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place (http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=60955)

If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask. Otherwise,

Take care!
tea :greeting:
