My question is why am I getting the following message frequently from avast!?:

Network shield: blocked "LSASS Exploit (SXP)" - attack from 24.80.170.32:445/tcp

I have IE set to high security, and I usually work with Firefox. Does anyone know what's provoking these attacks? Is there a specific thing I should do to prevent the attacks from even occurring?

As you can see whoever it is, is blacklisted. My feeling is that this was an attempt and they are happening all of the time but your security blocked it and reported it. I see no evidence of any malware in the HJT log? Are you experiencing any malware issues other that what is probably bots trying to find computers with open ports?

Does anyone know what's provoking these attacks? Most often anymore it is about the $$$. The hackers will do what they can to infect you if it will get them some.

The required antivirus online scan will show stuff HJT can't because of it's small size. If you are having no real malware issues, then I would say you are good to go and take this information with you.

I've looked at http://whois.domaintools.com/24.80.170.32 and it appears that my ISP is the culprit. Does this make sense? I've sent their admin the information. Perhaps I've misinterpreted the domaintools info, and it's a user on the same server as me. What do you think?

Hummm...I would suggest to them they are shown under Blacklist Status: Currently Listed (history)
If it is your ISP then I am not surprised as information would be moving both ways on the computer from them. It would be worth your time to discuss it with them.

Hi Phil. I've been slowly working through Steve Gibson's advice (as time permits), and I've come to a point where there's no XP option. I see that his information was written in 2003 and I wonder how I should proceed. Under Network Bondage, he says "So choose the path you want to follow and we'll continue . . ." and then provides a 95/98 or NT option." Should I be following his instructions to the letter, assuming I use the 95/98 option?

You gave me some other sites to look at, but I thought I should work through Gibson first. I'm currently at the stage where I've unchecked Microsoft Networks client and File and Printer sharing. Should I proceed through the rest of his stuff, since does seem to be dated - or are those two access points the most important?

I posted the Steve Gibson site along with a lot of others on Google to give you tools to check for open port problems. I have no idea what you are trying to accomplish with the information. Keep in mind I deal with malware removal. I do note Steve's website has http://www.grc.com/support.htm and an email address there if you wish to ask specific questions.
