Homepage hijacked

Hi there - I wonder if someone can help me.
I was on the internet when Mcaffee flashed up that I had been infected and that it had quarantined the virus / trojan. When I logged on the next day I found my PC going very slow and decided to run Spybot + adaware to see if they came up with anything (both updated). Adaware came up with 11 tracking cookies (TAC rating of 3- nothing to get too concerned about) But Spybot came up with Zlob. I asked spybot to fix Zlob and it said it did but the PC did not feel right. I investigated a bit further and downloaded Smitfraud ( also latest version) and ran it. I ran a check and then restarted in safe mode and did a clean. Everything now seems to be ok but I cannot change my Homepage in IE- it now defaults to MSN and I cannot change it. I did have the option for Spybot to lock the Browser page from inside Spybot but I can change it there but it keeps on coming back to MSN? I ran Hijack this scan to see if something was holding it out in the registry and the Hijack this file is attached below - Can anyone tell me how to get my Homepage back? - I usually have it set to Google .co.uk
I had a look at the registry and there is a regsitry change under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Start Page=

I have attemted to change this in the registry and I cannot change it and I cannot delete it? Everything else about my PC seems to be working ok except for this and it looks like it is something that Smitfraudfix has put into the registry? I also cannot restore to a previous point before I had this trouble- can anyone tell me what has happened - it looks to me like a script that Smitfraudfix has left in - how do i get rid of it?

Welcome to the forum, if you still have this problem I will see what I can do. First be aware that malware has made a change in your "Truested Zones"

and that you have an outdated Java program that will get you infected, see this information:

Update to the newwst version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.

We need to get that Protocol reset to where it belongs and sometimes it is very hard to do this. I will start with the easiest way and see what happens. Before I give you those directions, I would like you to look here:
Internet Explorer > Tools > Options> General Tab > Home Page and tell me what HomePage is set there.

Since I did not get to see any results from the Smitfraudfix work, I would like you to download Smitfraudfix from here to your Desktop.(if you have any old versions on board, delete them) and run ONLY the "Search" function, then post the C:\Report.txt in this topic.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

If any program you have onboard tries to block the HJT change, make sure you allow it or turn the program off while you make the change.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

run cleanmgr

PSkelley - Thanks for your help - can you tell me how my trusted zone has been changed and what the consequence of this can be?
I will carry oput your suggestions to the letter when I get back home and let you know what the results are - unfortunately I work away from home and will not be back home for 2 weeks but will be back in touch then.

ProtocolDefaults maps a protocol to a particular security zone. For example all http:// sites are mapped to the Internet zone.

Sometimes malware will map these protocols, or other protocols, to a different zone that have lower security. Examples of these in a hijackthis log are:

I am home now and have carried out the instructions you gave me to the letter.
First off when I go to Internet Explorer > Tools > Options> General Tab > Home Page my homepage is set as :http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?[COLOR="blue"]prd=
I removed my old java program and downloaded a new java program from the website. I then deleted the old copy of Smitfraudfix and downlaoded a new one and ran it the log is here

Thanks for returning your information. I looked ahead in the book and know what is at the end, so let's address that first. First thing would be your version of Zone Alarm. I am using the free product and running version 6.5.737.000. If you are not there, first update the firewall and see if that corrects the problem.

If that does not fix the issue, then uninstall ZA, make the change and reinstall ZA. We had to do this a lot before ZA updated and this is the first time I have had the complaint in a while which is why I asked your version.

Question, doesn't all of that aol junk clutter your toolbar area if you use MSN?

Hi PSK,
I tried to update Zone alarm and could not do it. Every time I tried to update it told me it could not shut down ZA and then the PC froze -After restarting it and trying in lots of different ways to uninstall or shut it down I eventually started in safe mode and uninstalled it. I then changed my homepage and hey presto it worked. I tried to reinstall the free version of ZA but nowadays it only gives you a 15 day trial so i have turned on my windows firewall. I have rerun HJT and my log is below.
I have not changed the buttons in my registry which point towards google as they are there because I changed the registry in my attempts to unlock my homepage- I actually like Google as my homepage so I have left them alone. The AOL stuff is becauae AOl is my service provider but when I installed the router I stopped using AOL as my homepage because it is slow to load, but my wife likes AOL so she has reinstalled the toolbar!!!

Thanks for your help - anything else I should be doing to protect myself? - anything else I should use as a firewall now that I have uninstalled ZA?

I see no malware in your HJT log and suggest you do this: System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
