View Full Version : Antivermin, Malwarewiped et al
Hi,
My computer was infected with the above mentioned malware and a couple of more of the same family. Part of problem seems to be resolved with help of Search&destroy and other anti-spyware programmes I have tried. Now there seem to be something left, since I get that pop-up abt buying anti-malware again. I tried to follow your advice in downloading Hijackthis, however my McAfee virus programme blocks this and deletes the file, quoting it is infected by virus, something like "worm!32". Can you please advice? I have attached the scanning report by Smithfraudfix as a substitute in the meantime:

I use McAfee myself and wonder how they can block a valid program and can't block malware? They had this issue a while ago, make sure your McAfee is totally up to date. If you still have problems, turn off McAfee until you get the download.

Thanks for advice. Below is attached the results of a fresh SmithFraudFix scan and the HJT scan, which was successfully performed after turning off McAfee antivirusprogramme. You are correct, it is probably not updated to the last version. I have also installed Antivir programme after reading your forum. Is that an enough substitute for a working McAfee? Thanks for returning the information, Smitfraudfix located and removed junk as you saw.
We still have a few issues to take care of.
1) You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly. Uninstall one, update the one you keep and run a complete system scan, post for me any item that can't be removed, the complete name and pathway.

Hi, now I have done the following:
1) Removed AntiVir and left McAfee. I still need to renew my subscription of McAfee and update the VirusScan. Will do that as soon as you think my computer is clean and i can start using my credit card on the net again
2) Installed the new Java 6.0

And forgot to answer your last question. The computer is running ok, however I clearly find it slower to start up and populate the icons etc. It also seems in general a bit slower than before the virus incident. Otherwise I have not found any particular problems

Once I have a look at the HJT log I will post some links that may help speed up the computer.
Before I start, the first thing I notice is both Windows Defender and CounterSpy running. While the jury is still out on how many programs for "spyware" should be running and is more than one too many. The proliferation of programs is a recent thing and while we know more than one antivirus program and more than one firewall is not a good thing, the question about how many of the spyware type programs should be running is still unanswered. You may wish to query Sunbelt Software (here in my hometown) and/or Microsoft to see what they say.
I would also like to mention McAfee. While I have used VSO for many years, they are recently pushing a hugh suite on folks and everyone I have seen who accepted it has issues with a slow computer. The thing is apparantly worse than the Norton Security Suites. I caution you to be careful with what you download from McAfee.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Your HJT log appears clean of malware. I see programs you may not need to boot everytime, but only you will know what you need. These links will help identify them, look at the ones like this:

If I have not mentioned it, remove any program we used during the cleanup, the exception would be ATF-Cleaner, you may keep it if you wish. Let's clean the System Restore files.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Ok - have now done the last bits and pieces. The computer runs fine again and starts up relatively quick. Many thanks for great help, would still be stuck with antiwermin, zorb etc without your advice. /e
