I have read the posts about Spybot and the Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled notification. But I have an extra issue. I went in and manually set my Security Center to automatic and started it, but each time I reboot it is set to disabled again. So, something is disabling my Security Center at Start Up. I don’t know much about the Security Center, but it seems to me this shouldn’t be happening. This may be a formatting issue, and not malicious software, but Spybot first discovered it, So:

1. Updated S&D and ran it. Got the above notification and fixed it.

2. Ran eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner: No Viruses Found.

3. Rebooted in safe mode and ran Spybot, got Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled, fixed it, ran Spybot again, all clean.

4. HJT Log:

Hi anticon and welcome to the Forums :)

Jus some leftovers in HijackThis log....

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

Restart your computer.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer

This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.

Thank you Mr_Jak3
I deleted the files you suggested and rebooted, but I have been unable to run Kaspersky on my computer. I click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner" and that takes me to a welcome screen with a privacy policy. I click "accept" there and am sent to the scanner, which requests an Active X download. After I accept the ActiveX it goes back to the welcome screen with the privacy policy, but there are now no "accept" or "decline" buttons, and no way to get the scanner back.

Am I doing something wrong? I am using the most recent version of IE when I attempt Kaspersky. Is there another virus scanner I can use to post here? I am still having the same issue after deleting the files in HJT.

Anymore advice would be appreciated.

Hi again :)

Looks good now, how is the computer running ?

Nice to hear that you're interested in removing malware. Malware Removal University (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=233&sid=c06a1edd8b6d53f0506d5590d17d829d) is open.

Then you should update your Java to the latest version (6.0) Start
Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs
Delete the old Java, J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Install it

=============

Now that you seem to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Clear your system restore (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx)
This will clear the system restore folders from possible malware that was left behind during the cleaning process.

Use ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1)
Download and install ATF Cleaner. Clean your temporary files & folders with it regularly.

Use Ad-Aware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48)
Download and install Ad-Aware. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Use AVG Anti-Spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/)
Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Use Spybot S&D (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=43)
Download and install Spybot S&D. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Install SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.

Install MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.

Use Firefox browser (http://www.mozilla.org)
Firefox is faster, safer and better browser than Internet Explorer.

Keep your systen up-to-date (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
Visit Windows Update regularly.

Keep your antivirus and firewall up-to-date
Scan your computer regularly with your antivirus.

Read this article by TonyKlein (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Stand Up and Be Counted ! (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php)
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Stay clean and be safe ;)

Something is still turning off my Security Center when I reboot, but at least I can now be reasonably sure it is some setting somewhere and not malware. Thank you for all of your help. I do already use most of the things you recommended, I was first tuned into malware but Xupiter, but I'm new to AVG and AFT, so I'm glad for the additions. I am looking forward to checking into malware school too. =)
Thanks again for all of your help.

Ok let's do a little research...

Generate a HijackThis Startup list:
Open HijackThis: Click on "Open the Misc Tools Section"
Check the following boxes to the right of "Generate StartupList Log": List also minor sections (Full)
List empty sections (Complete)
Click "Generate StartupListLog"
Click "Yes" at the prompt.
A Notepad window will open with the contents of the HijackThis Startup list displayed
Copy & Paste that log to here

Now we're talkin'. My machine is taking much longer to start up these days, and I've wanted to figure out why. I've had all sorts of issues since I downloaded a faulty version of .Net that I can't uninstall. I have to post this in two or three posts, I hope that is acceptable:

StartupList report, 2/5/2007, 6:59:10 PM
StartupList version: 1.52.2
Started from : C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.EXE
Detected: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
Detected: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.5730.0011)
* Using default options
* Including empty and uninteresting sections
* Showing rarely important sections

HI again :)

Ok you may fix all the following entries with HijackThis if you want to make your computer to run & load faster:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dell|Alert] C:\Program Files\Dell\Support\Alert\bin\DAMon.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IncrediMail] C:\Program Files\IncrediMail\bin\IncMail.exe /c

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

Then the startuplist revealed a malware leftover. We'll get rid of it.

Open HijackThis.
Open the Misc Tools section
Delete an NT service
Copy the following line to the box and press OK; mchInjDrv
Answer Yes
Close HIjackThis

Then let's try to start the Security Center manually.

Start
Run
Type services.msc to the field and press enter.
A window opens, scroll down to Security Center
Rightclick it and choose Start
Then choose Properties
Set Startup to Automatic
Click Apply and OK.
Close the window
Restart the computer.

Now run a new scan with HijackThis and let me know if security center is still disabled. :bigthumb:

Hello
I deleted the files you suggested from HJT, but it will not let me remove mchInjDrv. After the file name it reads (file missing), and when I move to delete it, the pop up says "Cannot delete file. Make sure the name is correct and the service is not running." Is it just a hollow file name?

Mr_JAk3
2007-02-07, 10:00
Ok let's try this then:

Open Notepad and copy the following lines into a new document:

@echo off
sc stop mchInjDrv
sc delete mchInjDrv

Save the document to your desktop as Remove.bat and filetype: All Files
Go to your desktop and run the file Remove.bat and allow to run it if prompted. A window will open and close.

Restart the computer.

Post a fresh HijackThis startuplist to here :bigthumb:

My excitement at writing my very first program was quickly overshadowed by the fact that the file is still there. HJT still includes:

mchInjDrv: \??\C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\mc21.tmp (disabled)

2007-02-08, 12:48
Hmm ok...

Disable the bad service
Start
Run
Type services.msc to the field and press enter.
A window opens, scroll down to mchInjDrv
Rightclick it and choose Stop
Then choose Properties
Set Startup to Disabled
Click Apply and OK.
Then, open HijackThis.
Open the Misc Tools section
Delete an NT service
Copy the following line to the box and press OK; mchInjDrv
Answer Yes
Close HIjackThis
Run ATF Cleaner Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer. Create a new startuplist with HijackThis. Is the service still there ? Is SecurityCenter still disabled at reboot ?

mchInjDrv is not listed in my services. I also ran a file search looking for *mc21.tmp* and found nothing.

Hi :)

Ok very good, the service is now removed. How is the computer running ?
Is Security Center still disabled at the startup ?

Well, the computer is running fine, but Security Center is still disabled at Start Up, even after I've manually started it and set it to automatic. And Start Up works longer than it seems it ought to. The mchInjDrv file still shows up on HJT, but it is not listed in my services. I might actually reformat this computer. It has been buggy ever since I downloaded that bad version of .Net that I can't uninstall. But thank you for all of your help. I am certainly cleaner than I was.

Ok if you haven't formatted yet, we could check one thing just in case...

Please run a GMER Rootkit scan:

Download GMER's application from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Unzip it and start the GMER.exe
Click the Rootkit tab and click the Scan button.

Once done, click the Copy button.
This will copy the results to your clipboard.
Paste the results in your next reply.

Warning ! Please, do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.

If you're having problems with running GMER.exe, try it in safe mode.

I feel so 1337 with all these search tools. HA!
No reformatting yet. Here is the scan. Requires two posts.

Nothing bad there either...

One more tool:

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

By the way, suddenly this morning Mozilla is not my default browser. When I clicked on your link in my e-mail, IE opened, and I had to reset my default to Firefox. Did we do something that deleted default settings?

Hi :)

Nothing bad in that log either. Yes ComboFix restores some default settings.

You're looking clean now. The thing with Security Center may be a some kind fo a bug or eg Norton might be disabling it (or parts of it)...

Here are some speed-up hints -> Link (http://www.castlecops.com/postitle175256-0-0-.html)

I think you are right. But thank you for all of your help! You've been great. And a lot of other bugs on my computer we weren't even talking about are gone now. Like, I kept telling my e-mail not to run in the systray at startup, but it never would, and now it suddenly is listening to me. And some programs that would never shut down when I rebooted don't pop up anymore. So thanks for that. And I learned a ton, and have some great new resources to poke around in.

Thank you!
