Hi all,

Recently my relatively new laptop has been sufferng from a slow internet connection (it was previously very good) and is also slowing down to a crawl at times. I did a SpyBot scan and nothing came up but when I went through the startup menu tool on spybot it said that one entry ctfmon.exe was malware connected to Coolwebsearch. I've used CWShredder but it came back clean. I've tried canceling it in the startup menu and also deleting it but it keeps returning.

I can report on what I see in the HJT log.

FIRST I wish to say that you said this:

This item: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe can indeed be a trojan, but I have rarely seen this to occur, especially not in a long time. This item is more than like valid, you can be sure by using one or more of these free online scans and you may need to show hidden files and folder to see it:

You can also navigate to the file and right click it then look at Properties. Since you know it should be part of
Microsoft Office Suite it should be obvious if it is a Microsoft or Windows file.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

A slow internet connection is something you should discuss with the Internet Service Provider.
I am not sure what kind of speeds they promised you, but you can check what you are receiving here:

I don't know how long ago you downloaded IE7, but some folks have experienced issues with speeds as a results, see this:

Ok, first up, cheers for the help and advice so far.

Second, apologies for not following all the steps in the "before you post" thread.

Here is the order I did things and what else I found out:

- I navigated to ctfmon.exe. It is a microsoft file and looks normal enough. Should have really checked this before I posted!

- Updated Java

- Since I had missed it in my first post, I did one of the online scans in the "before you post" thread. Used Trend's online scan, but it didn't give me the option at the end to produce/save a report. It scanned once and found a dialler called Dialler-BT and also found approx. 10 HTTP cookies. I clicked to fix and it scanned again and came back clean.

- Then used Spybot in safe mode. Noting flagged up except the usual 3 warnings tha windows security centre, firewall etc was disabled. Since I have other anti-spyware/anti-virus stuff running, I'm guessing these aren't a concern.

- Fixed the things you had indiacted in HJT and ran ATF.

- Ran HJT again and the log is posted at the end.

Thanks for the other links as well. I followed some of the advice given to improve general performance. (still could probably do with a de-frag) and downloaded the update for IE7 (which just seems to deactivate the phishing filter).

Also tested my connection. It comes back as about 0.9 Mbps download and 0.3 upload. When I hover the mouse over the little wireless connection icon next to the clockin the task bar, it says "Speed: 54 Mbps" and that my signal strength is excellent. Seems quite a difference between 0.9 and 54!! The connection and general performance is fine at the moment, but the problem occurs intermittently so I'll keep an eye on it. When it happened last time, I was still getting an "excellent" signal but it wouldn't load any webpages.

You'll also see from the log that between my first post and your reply I had downloaded a few anti-spyware programmes, like Windows Defender, Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard. I'm guessing it's ok to have all these running together.

One final thing, from the HJT log it looks like MSN Messagner is running. Things is, I never use it and had set it so it didn't run at startup and didn't run in the background. Same with Realplayer, which I have never used either.

Thanks for the feedback, sound like you are in good shape, if you want to run a free spyware scan, I suggest this one:

With those instructions, delete or at least quarantine anything located, post the scan results for me to view if you have questions.

I have not run Windows Defender but I have not heard any negative about it and the price is right. I have run SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard on all of my computers for many years. I will say that you should turn TeaTimer off:

SG and TeaTimer do the same thing and might conflict. I can see no reason why those programs should not run well together once you disable TeaTimer. For your benefit, here are tutorials for your new freeware:

One final thing, from the HJT log it looks like MSN Messagner is running. Things is, I never use it and had set it so it didn't run at startup and didn't run in the background. Same with Realplayer, which I have never used either. MSN Messenger comes with MSN Premium (don't confuse it with Windows Messenger which is part of WindowsXP), you can turn it off from within the program.
I am running Windows Live Messenger and it might be a bit different than your version:
Open Messenger > Tools > Options > General Tab > Sign in > Uncheck all boxes, apply and ok your way out. It should not start again.

RealPlayer also has to be disabled from within the program. It is especially hard to stop, if you do not use it, I suggest uninstalling it in Add Remove programs.

Since you recently removed some nasties, you should clean System Restore files like this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
