Hello, I've just finished your preliminary steps for posting a thread, and first I'd just like to thank you all for taking the time to help us people that need it! I've added a few other steps I've seen in other threads to give a more detailed analysis. My problem is exactly as stated in the subject. Everytime I click on a link after doing a search on a search engine, I am redirected to another site. I started by running a VirusTotal scan. Here is the VirusTotal log:

Complete scanning result of "svchosts.exe", received in VirusTotal at 01.30.2007, 00:29:25 (CET).

I then rebooted my computer and started in safe mode. I ran Spybot and then rebooted again. I read something in a thread along the way that going into msconfig and enabling all the startup applications will help HiJack this identify more files. I ran HiJack this and here is the log:

I would really appreciate any help I can get! And I'd like to apologize if I put too much space between scan logs, I just wanted to make sure they looked like seperate entries. thanks again! :bigthumb:

Welcome to the forum, if you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, please do this.

1) Download Smitfraudfix from this link, and follow ONLY the directions posted: http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

2) Your Java program is out of date, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\ <<< out of date, download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(first item is damaged, if you use it download it again after we are finished)
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O4 - Global Startup: run_startmenu.cmd
O9 - Extra button: PalTalk - {4EAFEF58-EEFA-4116-983D-03B49BCBFFFE} - C:\Program Files\Paltalk Messenger\Paltalk.exe (file missing)
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{E4970BC3-A3DF-4801-8408-2009CF860E21}: NameServer = 85.255.113.117,85.255.112.26
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.113.117 85.255.112.26
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.113.117 85.255.112.26
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.113.117 85.255.112.26

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the report.txt from Smitfraudfix, and a new HJT log. Include any comments you think will help and let me know about any malware issues at this point.

Did you purchase this program or is a trial?

Spysweeper is just a trial but i plan on purchasing it unless you can recommend a better antivirus program. I did a little searching on the google to see if I would be redirected when I clicked on a link but it seemed to be working fine and much quicker. Before, I was also noticing that there were be webpage addresses in my browsing history and temporary internet files from websites that i'm sure my family and I did not visit.I forget to mention this in my first post. But it seems to be fine I am not seeing any suspicious files in my history at this point but I haven't surfed the internet much since performing these scans. Thank you for your kind help.

Thanks for returning your information. You have posted only part of the HJT log, would you please post a complete log. Notepad > Edit > Select All > copy and paste the highlited information to your topic. I need to see the log before I can comment on it, but from the sound of your comments, it seems we were successful. Has the computer comtinued to perform to your expectations?

Spysweeper: I have never used the product personally, but we use the trial quite a bit and it seems to perform fine. I make a point of not suggesting anything but freeware programs, of which you will read about in the links I post in closing. I have also not personally run Windows Defender, but I can suggest it as freeware:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Post that complete HJT log and I will get you on your way if all is well.

Thanks

I must apologize, it seems notifications has failed and I was not told when you posted.
As far as I can see this last HJT log is clean of malware and if you are having no malware issues, I would say you are good to go.
I did notice that it looks like this program is set to run at every boot:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RegSweep] "C:\Program Files\RegSweep\RegSweep.exe" -boot
I personally do not believe you need to scan every time and suggest you turn it off and scan on demand when you feel it is necessary. Here is a great link with information to make the computer run even better:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
