View Full Version : Decreased Computer Performance

My computer has been running slower lately, I'm not sure why.

I have many FREE anti virus/spyware things loaded onto my computer (AVG, adaware, Spybot, Defender) that say my computer is fine. But, when scaneed with the trial version of Uniblue SpyEraser, it finds that my computer has multiple infections from spyware, but I have to pay to fix it, which I am not about to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, let me first say that while SpyEraser is not on my list of rouge products:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
I have no knowledge of this product, but it will not be the first time I have heard of products finding stuff to goad a purchase. I say...buyer beware!

I am also seeing nothing in the HJT log but a little clutter, let me suggest you look at this information first:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html

If you want a good check for junk from a free program that will remove what it finds, follow the directions in this link, make sure you delete or at least quarantine anything the program locates. Post the scan results so I can have a look.

Thanks

Hi pskelley, thank you for replying. I have one little question:
Whenever I check my task manager when the computer is running slow, it is always seemingly caused by a process named svchost.exe, which is constantly using upper 90s to 100% of the CPU. I was just wondering if this is the problem, and if it is then what should I do to get rid of it.

Thank you and I will try to post the results of the scan soon.

Thanks for the feedback, first: svchost.exe is a very important file, please view this information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056

This article describes Svchost.exe and its functions. Svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries (DLLs).
The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. I suggest you read the rest. Now understand that hackers also use this name to confuse folks so they do not know it is malware, I usually see it running then from C:\Windows\ or elsewhere. There are also many other reasons for high CPU usage that have nothing to do with malware.

Here are resources to help troubleshoot these issues:
http://kadaitcha.cx/high_cpu.html here is the Google on this:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-16,GGLG:en&q=high+cpu+usage

I just ran into this a day or so ago where the member had downloaded some program to install patches that cause the problem, if I can find the link I will post it. If this just started all of a sudden, look at anything that was installed around the same time.
I am still not saying this is not possibly malware, HJT can not show everything because of it's small size. If the other information does not help, then run the program I posted a link to, perhaps it will spot something hiding.

Another good possibility would be to run a diagnostic here: http://www.pcpitstop.com/
Post a link to the results, I may spot something to help.

Thanks

Yes, I have reviewed the links to the information you sent earlier, but I pretty much knew about the high CPU usage. BUt, when I googled svchost.exe, one of the articles from Uniblue.com (strangely the creator of the pay for removal spyware scanner I told you about earlier) says theat svchost is a common target for hackers. I thought this was pretty strange.

Anyways, this is the address to my results:

You said:
strangely the creator of the pay for removal spyware scanner I told you about earlier) says theat svchost is a common target for hackers. I thought this was pretty strange.Review this information again: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056
Remember the hackers can run their junk from where they wish and call it whatever they want, but they use this service to run their crap.
Look through some of this information to help you understand:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-16,GGLG:en&q=svchost%2eexe

Now looking at your diagnostic, you have a serious harddrive space problem, and minor internet problems you need to address. I will assume you have reviewed the information. If you need help with the information, it is available here:
http://pcpitstop.invisionzone.com/index.php?showforum=6

These two jump out at me but you should review all information provided:
Free space 5410 MB (14%)
Junk files 708 MB (2%)

Let's do a quick check, open MyComputer, then right click the C drive and click properties. On the General tab post the used space and free space available. Your tools are there, and you appear to need those also.
While I can not copy and paste all of the information to this topic, and you should be about reviewing it all, this is important:
Solutions
You may be able to increase available disk space by uninstalling applications, deleting unneeded files, or moving rarely-needed files to a backup such as Zip, CD-R, or tape. If this does not free up enough disk space, you should consider installing another disk drive, either as a replacement to the existing one or as an addition to it.

I see no malware in this HJT log you posted. I would seriously consider uninstalling this program: Uniblue SpyEraser and I would be glad to look at your uninstall list and make suggestions if you wish:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

(In your situation with limited disk space, I am going to suggest you uninstall this program)
AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Uninstall list:

AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5I convered this earlier and due to the limited space I suggest you uninstall the program.

Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer: This can be uninstallrf if you don't use it.

Viewpoint Media Player: resource waster, see this information and uninstall this one. For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

we have alot of games on the computer, as you can see I can see and can't help with that. You know now what the problem is, lack of hard drive space. You have no room to install anything. I have done about all I can for you.

Thanks

Thank you pskelley for helping me out. I have one more question-

When the computer first started going slow I installed like 5 adware removal programs (i.e. Defender, Spybot, Ad aware, Avg, Spy eraser) I was wondering if that many scanners slows my computer down and If it would be a good idea to remove some.

Thanks for the hep, I really appreciate it.

You are sure welcome, you should have running at all times one antivirus program (AVG) that you either set to auto or manually update and run often. One firewall and at least one Spyware program (Windows Defender will do) Spybot S&D and Ad-aware run on demand only so all they do not slow the computer, they just use space on the drive. My advice would be to dump other junk and keep those. I do not use Spy eraser and know nothing about it. I will say again, it is not your malware programs that are causing you space problems. My best advice if you are satisfied with the computer, install another hard drive.
