Protection bar - Removal help [Archive]

Hello,

I have the same problem as what seems like quite a few people have had. Where you get that Protection Bar that won't go. I have disabled it, but can't get rid of it. Also these bubbles appear periodically saying to get this and that virus protection to get rid of infected files etc.

I have done the HijackThis and SmitfraudFix bits but what do i do next.

There was a thread 8693 where Shaba helped out and sorted a similar problem for someone previously.

Welcome to the forum, before I look at the information you sent, I wish to call your attention to this very important post:

As great as HJT it cannot see everything, especally with many of the newer infections. I may need that antivirus scan and will let you know.

A look at the report from Smitfraudfix and your HJT log shows you definately have a nasty infection, please follow these directions.

1) BullGuard, which I am not familiar with, may interfere with the fix, please disable it when you run the tools.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

3) I would also like a look at your uninstall list like this:

Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Restart the computer and post the C:\report.txt from Smitfraudfix, your uninstall list, and a new HJT log. Please add any comments you think will help.
