You're infected.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan :sick:

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the infection has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Hi,

I guess I have no real choice but to reformat due to what you say about there being no way to fully trust the computer again after cleaning the infection.

As of yet there has been no sign of identity theft or fraud, what is the best course of action regarding this?

I have a second hard drive installed internally; connected via sata. I use windows xp's built in backup program to do a weekly (or so) backup of the whole system. I would obviously like to keep all the documents related to this computer. Would I have to reformat the second hard drive to rid it of possible infections before backing up data to it. Please advise on the wisest route to backing up precious data and re-installing OS. I purchased the computer from Novatech and as a result do not have a windows xp disk, but a boot disk from the company instead.

Hi :)

Yes there is a cleaning method for the infection you have but because of it's backdoor functionality it is possible that something is left nehind even if you're looking clean...So I just wanted to warn you...

Well the best action would be to contact banks & creditcard companies if such info has been on the computer. Also passwords should be changed but using a different computer...

Reformat means that wipe the whole drive and then install Windows again. Documents, pictures, music should be safe to backup but eg exe and dll files may be infected. Also it is possible that your other harddrive is infected too.

Ok, contacted all banks and credit cards, that's sorted. They're all alerted!

I'd like to reformat as that is the only way I can be sure of being clean. basically, I have two hard drives to play with; one with windows loaded and one with the backup(s). How can I save my documents, pictures, music, etc with a reformat?

Instructions on how to keep these and reformat both hard drives (if need be) will be appreciated. Please advise on next course of action.

What type is your pc ? The recovery disk you have propably must be inserted to the disk drive and it needs the computer to be restarted. Then it propably has some options for reformat, reinstall, repair install and so on. It is a bit hard to tell because every manufacturer has it on disks...

Then there are a couple of things you should do immediately after installing Windows and before surfing the net... Install an antivirus and firewall (you should download and have those on a CD or USB drive, all ready to be installed).
