View Full Version : Help wanted with removing Zlob

Sorry to hassle everyone here, but if anyone could help me with this it'd be great. I've read a few of the posts in the archives and it looks like I've got a similar problem, but none of the fixes I've read about have worked. My computer started acting up, so I ran a SpyNoMore scan which detected tonnes of Zlob files. Windows Defender apparently removed Zlob, but the SpyNoMore still detects related files, although I've managed to manually delete Malware, Antivermins, and the Active X Video Object that started it all. Here are my HijackThis and SmitFraud reports:

Welcome to the forum, please follow these instructions.

1) You are running three antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing.
They will conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\
C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\VSO\
C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\

2) Your Java is outdated, see this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

3) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

4) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Restart the computer and post the C:\report.txt from Smitfraudfix and a new HJT log. Please complete all instructions before you post that log. Use Post Reply, stay in this same topic and let me know how the computer is running at that point.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information. You asked:
The computer seems to be running fine and there are no symptoms of the Trojan that I can see - however when I did a SpyNoMore scan it detected 3 files: ErrorSafe and 2 copies of System Alert Popup. Should I be worried about these?Once you are ready to post that next HJT log, ask these questions again if the issues still exist.

Your HJT log is much improved but we have work to do, first some information.

We know more than one firewall or antivirus program is not good because of conficts, but the jury is still out on multiple spyware programs. In your case you are running four and at least one of those is on the rouge spyware list, and the one that is finding stuff appears to have just been removed, when you look you will see it was there and where it says read(note) is where we are usually told it just got off the list and may be still questionable. For some reason the link there is not working so I can't see how SpywareWarrior is advising us.
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#snm_note

I do not use any of the programs you are running with the exception of McAfee which I may dump if it keep getting bigger and bigger, it is becoming quite the resource hog. In light of this I will make suggestions and you must do as you think best.
Here is some information for your benefit:
http://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,1738,1639157,00.asp
http://www.consumersearch.com/www/software/anti-spyware-reviews/index.html
http://www.firewallguide.com/spyware.htm

Windows Defender: good feedback from users and the price is right

SpywareDoctor: No knowledge of it, but most folks who use it grade it high?

SpyNoMore: to soon of the rouge list, I suggest you get it off your computer

spywarebot: rouge spyware, I strongly suggest you remove it from your computer.

Considering that advice, this is what I suggest you do:

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Spyware Doctor: From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".

5) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall SpyNoMore, spywarebot and any other program you know should not be there.

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\SpyNoMore\ <<< delete that folder

C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\ <<< delete that folder

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post a new HJT log and let me know how the computer is running. And comments you think will help.

Thanks

I will include this information for you now, I do not know what you need at every boot, but I see stuff I will guess may not need to start everytime you turn on the computer and could be started in All Programs when needed. This information will help you with that if you wish:
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ and here is some information that will help your computer to run better:

The reason there were so many Anti-spyware programs running was I panicked at the first sign of the trojan and downloaded as many as I could... Also do you know anything about SpyHunter? I seem to have acquired that from somewhere - it's not on the rogue list in the link you gave me.

My other question: is there any reason that Firefox can't be removed via Control Panel?

Lastly, the network I'm on for some reason won't let me update McAffee virus scan - would you recommend disabling it and relying on a downloadable program, or should I stick with it?

Thanks again.

Good to hear the computer is running better, let me look at the HJT log, then I will try to answer your questions.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 20:03:47, on 15/02/2007
What do you know about these items?
C:\DOCUME~1\GRAHAM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\nstmp\uninstall.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\GRAHAM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\nstmp1\uninstall.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\GRAHAM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\nstmp2\uninstall.exe
When I search: nstmp I get this information:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Nstmp_folders
The rest of the log looks fine. A search of uninstall.exe says they are a problem:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-16,GGLG:en&q=uninstall%2eexe
You need to find out what they are, here are free online scanners:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

You can also navigate to that Temp folder and delete everything in it as long as you know they are not something necessary.

SpyHunter: Where are you seeing it? I see Windows Defender and Spyware Doctor.

Firefox is in Add Remove programs under the name: Mozilla Firefox

Would you mind if I have a look at that uninstall list, like this:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Lastly, the network I'm on for some reason won't let me update McAffee virus scan - would you recommend disabling it and relying on a downloadable program, or should I stick with it?I can't understand why the network would prevent you from updating your virus scan program? You are running VSO which I run. I would contact McAfee for instructions, you are paying them for protection, correct?
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/default.asp?siteID=1&cnrcheck=done&resolution=1024x768
https://knowledge.mcafee.com/article/664/KB43996_f.SAL_Public.html

I would think you should resolve this issue, if we remove McAfee you might not be able to get updates for the next program.

Recap: Find out what those three items in the Temp folder and post the uninstall list and a new HJT log. Let me know about any problems at that point.

Thanks

Thanks once again.

When I looked at those nstmp files, I found that I've got 4 folders (nstmp, then nstmp1 through to 3) with two identical files in each, both titled uninstall. One is an application, affiliated to mozilla.org and the other is a notepad file subtitled configuration settings. The dates they were created seem to correspond to the times that I attempted to uninstall Firefox - that would make sense because I tried several times. I uploaded them to http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and found nothing wrong with them. Although this might tie in with one of my other problems...

I managed to find Firefox in Control Panel but it wouldn't get rid of it. I just click Change/Remove then nothing happens. In fact the window sort of freezes and I have to close it by right-clicking on it at the bottom of the screen.

Here's the uninstall list:

Mozilla Firefox 1.5 <<<< for starters you have an old version. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program before, but never had the issues you are having. It may be since you could no find it in Add Remove that you tried to remove it by another method? Like deleting the folder and this may be causing the backups, of which there are four now, to be created. I suggest you try reinstalling the product and once it is installed, then use the uninstaller. I can not see the program in the HJT log so it may have been partially uninstalled. Beyond that, you would have to contact Mozilla for support.
http://www.mozilla.org/support/

Uninstall list, here are my suggestions:

Hijackthis 1.99.1
HijackThis 1.99.1
This is showing as here: C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe return to there and if you have it installed twice, delete one copy.

Mozilla Firefox (1.5) Not sure why it won't uninstall.

SpyHunter: I would uninstall it, but it's gone from HJT and there may be nothing to uninstall?

Viewpoint Media Player see the information below:
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint

I am guessing, but I suggest you boot to safe mode and delete the contents of this folder:
C:\DOCUMENTS & SETTINGS~1\GRAHAM~1\LOCALSETTINGS~1\Temp\ <<< delete the contents of that folder in red (NOT THE FOLDER)
Then I suggest you reboot to normal mode and try to remove Mozilla Firefox 1.5 using the uninstaller in Add Remove Programs.

(these all should go with that stuff in the TEMP folder
C:\DOCUME~1\GRAHAM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\nstmp\uninstall.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\GRAHAM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\nstmp1\uninstall.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\GRAHAM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\nstmp2\uninstall.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\GRAHAM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\nstmp3\uninstall.exe

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 21:35:19, on 15/02/2007

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Let me know how it goes

Thanks
