I've spent the past 5 days trying to clean my son's laptop.

Everytime something was found, new malware would appear. I thought a couple of times that the laptop was clean, but it wasn't. Within a short period of time new ones would appear.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've run everything that could possibly be run to fix the situation.

Avast
Spybot
Adaware
AVG with ewido
smitrem
smitfraudfix
VundoFix.exe

Today I ran everything again 3 times each as it seemed everything was fixed and nothing was coming up, however, I'm just not sure. The laptop runs much better than it was and is no longer sluggish. However, because it has appeared clean before, I need help.

I'm posting the HiJackThis log. Let me know if you need anything else.

Welcome to the forum, let me first point you to these instructions:
"BEFORE you POST" -Preliminary Steps
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
I can see you have run a lot of malware programs but I see no antivirus scan results. HJT can not see everything and that log shows us stuff it can't see, I may need it run and will let you know.

You still have junk that needs to go and it is probably not going to give up easily, we will have a go with HJT first:

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) AVG ANTI-SPYWARE: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {20F8B367-038D-B610-8F64-0A729CA0DC37} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gelamqn.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {257DCB7C-91F3-4337-AFC8-EA48C2AE3F28} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\xxwuu.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4BAF3F6F-C82B-40DA-8DFC-3E5148DAB552} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A203EE6B-DAA2-4F2F-BB08-0B664BDB751C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wvuvtqp.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A23D28A4-B5BA-4042-A900-C1492305D1B2} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dfdhrdg.dll] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe "C:\Documents and Settings\User1\Local Settings\Application Data\dfdhrdg.dll",wjcopic
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winkbe32 - winkbe32.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Documents and Settings\User1\Local Settings\Application Data\dfdhrdg.dll <<< delete that file
This one is a real problem, if it is not there, then search for it. It must be deleted.

6) You have AVG Anti-Spyware onboard, please follow the directions in this link. Make sure you delete or at least quarantine anything it locates and save the scan report.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the scan report from AVG Anti-Spyware and a new HJT log. Add any comments you think will help and tell me how the computer is running now. Please use Post Reply, stay in this topic.

Thanks

Thanks for the response.

I have already changed the folder settings to show the hidden and protected files, but will check again to see if somehow they are still checked.

Do you want HJT run in normal or safe mode?

Thx.

Please run all tools in Normal Mode unless I specify otherwise.

Thanks

Thanks.

Have downloaded atribune, and about to run HJT. I did check the hidden and protected files settings and the hidden file extensions was unchecked. but the Hide protected operating system files was checked. Will uncheck that now.

I have disabled the Resident Shield in AVG anti-spyware.

Will post HJT results shortly.

I'm posting from my PC which is clean, and have disabled the internet connection on my son's laptop.

Have done all recommendations except run Avast. It will take some time to run it, so will post the scan results later. The laptop is running much better, the shutdown and restart are no longer slow and sluggish.

Thx so much for your help.

Below are the reports. Thanks

Please take the time to review the instructions, not following them will slow both of us.

Note: In notepad under Format, uncheck "Word Wrap" Produce all HJT logs like this, single spaced.

I cannot scan a formatted log, post a new one according to instructions.

This log is looking good, AVG Anti-Spyware is showing nothing but a couple of cookies. How is the computer running now, and malware issues?

Here is a link that should help you get the computer running better:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Thx again for your help and information.

The laptop is running much better, and seems to have "recovered" nicely from its virus/malware onslaught.

I went out for awhile and my son ran Avast, but forgot to make a report. So I will manually list what it found.

There were 3 infections:

C:\System Volume Information\...\A0032641.dll - Win32.adware-gen.[Adw]
C:\System Volume Information\...\A0035966.dll - Win32.adware-gen.[Adw]
C:\VundofixBackups\tnesopwh.dll.bad - Win32.adware-gen.[Adw]

Thx for the ATF cleaner link, it is a definite keeper and useful tool to have.

I will follow your advice for the system restore, and check out the other links.

Your help in this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback, the first two items are in System Restore and will be gone when you turn it back on. The other is in VundofixBackups, remove all Vundofix from your computer, it would need downloading if you should ever need it again since it is constantly being updated.

Thx Phil. Your advice has been very helpful.

One quick question if I can on this forum. I use Agnitum Outpost firewall (free version) but my son doesn't like it. He is using MS firewall, which I don't trust for protection.

Question: Can you recommend any other firewall that he could use, preferably a free one.

Hi Marg, free firewalls are getting harder and hard to find. I use ZoneAlarm Free and have for years:

ZA TUT
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/tutorial/1.jsp
This was was suggested as a good one by folks I trust, but I have no personal experience with it:
http://www.jetico.com/index.htm#/jpfirewall.htm

Here is some info from Fred Langa but it is dated:

Some reviews: http://www.firewallguide.com/software.htm

I hope that helps...Phil

Thx again

I'll check them out.

Hopefully he'll find one he likes

Nothing against you or your help, but hopefully I won't need to post again about this problem. :bigthumb:
