Hello all,

I am running Symantec SCS and I am getting constant outgoing mail scans. I have scanned with SAVCE as well as Spybot, AdAware and AVG and all are coming up clean. My ISP has already blocked port 25 once and this is my business computer so I am hoping to get this resolved before they do it again.

Here is a current HiJackThis log:

BTW, I am running XP pro SP2 with all patches installed (except IE7...for obvious reasons).

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I will continue to work on this and post my findings as well.

Welcome to the forum, you have some nasty stuff, and probably a rootkit infection. Please look over the information I have posted.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexecu.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexecu.exe
http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/trojraseras.html?_log_from=rss
O23 - Service: HID Input Service WIN32 (HID_Input_Service_WIN32) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexecu.exe
O23 - Service: Input Service (Input_Service) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexecu.exe
HID Input Service WIN32 (HID_Input_Service_WIN32) X msiexecu.exe Added by the Troj/Raser-AS TROJAN! Note: Located in C:\Windows\System (Win9x/Me), C:\%WINDIR%\System32 (XP/WinNT/2K) Creates this file SndSystem.sys which acts as a rootkit.

Let's start like this:

1) AVG ANTI-SPYWARE: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

2) Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

(hold the logs and reports until we finish)

3) Follow these instructions to run AVG Anti-Spyware. Make sure you delete or at least quarantine anything it finds.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

4) run cleanmgr
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/

Restart the computer and post the Report.txt from SDFix, the scan results from AVG Anti-Spyware a new HJT log and and comments you think will help.

Once that information is posted, please follow these instructions to look for a rootkit:

Please download F-Secure BlackLight Beta:
https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/index.shtml

Save it to its own folder on the Desktop
Double-click blbeta.exe to run the program
Click : Scan
A list of all items found is created

The list is in the BlackLight folder on the Desktop, and named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx are numbers).

Please provide the log created by BlackLight in your next reply.

(post it as soon as you have it, DO NOT remove anything yourself, most if not all with be valid)

Thanks

Thanks for the prompt response and help!

The following log files are in the order that they were run...the last HiJackThis log was run after a reboot following the CLeanMGR and AVG scan...

I was unable to post it as one post (too long) so it is broken into two posts....

The Blacklight program showed (0 items found).

My SCS 10.02 did finally tell me that "msiexecu.exe is attempting to access the internet" and allowed me to block it so the spam is not making it out of my network although my bet is that it is still there....

Please let me know if I can provide any more information that will help...

Update before I go to bed...

I booted up my PC with ERD Commander which lets me boot into XP straight from CD and I was able to rename msiexecu.exe (to msiexecu-old.exe). Here is the latest HiJackThis log which still shows this entry although it is obviously listed as (file missing) but it still will not remove this entry....but at least the file is gone. I assume it is safe to delete this file instead of just renaming it but I will wait for the greater minds than mine to make that decision :)

Any updates or suggestions are still greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot!

Todd

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Seems SDFix did not remove all of the junk, and I will let Andy know. Rather that run the fix again, let try it manually.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) AVG ANTI-SPYWARE: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Input Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Delete the offending Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type (Input_Service) and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

5) http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#HTProcessManager
How to use the Process Manager
This is the item you will highlite and end process on:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexecu.exe

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O23 - Service: Input Service (Input_Service) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexecu.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexecu.exe <<< delete that file

That file must go, if it gives you any problems, restart your computer in safe mode and delete it there.
(if needed: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html )

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post a new HJT log along with any comments you think will help.

Thanks

I completed all steps however:

In the Kill Process step, the process was not there. I assume this is because I was able to rename msiexecu.exe previously.

I did go ahead and delete the renamed version of msiexecu.exe.

Here is the HJT log:

How the computer doing now Todd? As far as I can see from here, you are good to go, take this information with you.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Hi Todd, Glad to hear things are running better I am. I have a request from Andy (creator of SDFix), he would like to look at some information to make sure your computer is fixed as it should be. Seems this junk may have made changes we can't see and we do not wish to leave you any problems.

Here is what we need from you, click this link and follow these directions: How to Make a .Bat File

http://www.nellie2.co.uk/file.htm#How_to_Make_a_.Bat_File

Remember that is only an example, follow the directions and this is the information you will copy to the notepad:

Could you ask them to create a batch file with this inside then post back the results of the Check.txt file which will open on screen

echo Security Center:>>Check.txt
sc qc wscsvc >>Check.txt
echo.>>Check.txt
echo SharedAccess:>>Check.txt
sc qc sharedaccess >>Check.txt
echo.>>Check.txt
echo TrojanServices:>>Check.txt
sc qc Input_Service >>Check.txt
sc qc HID_Input_Service_WIN32>>Check.txt
sc qc Sndsystem>>Check.txt
notepad Check.txt
del /q Check.txt

I will let you know what Andy has to say.

Thanks...Phil
