I have used SpyBot for some while. Tea Timer runs throughout and the System Startup Tool has been useful to restrict unnecessary auto starts. Version 1.4 is installed and is up to date.

Recently some new entries have appeared and I am uncertain if these are OK or represent a problem. At the end of the System Startup report page the following entries appear: -

I normally use SpyBot, Adaware, Norton System Works, Windows Defender and Windows Firewall together with a hardware firewall via the Belkin wireless Modem/Router. Updates in XP pro (SP2) are set to auto as is Live Update in Norton and I frequently monitor updates for the other programs I use.

You will note the presence of a number of other security programs as a result of this exercise.

The computer generally is functioning properly (just occasionally refusing to switch between users smoothly, and occasionally at closedown seeming to hang) however I have seen a suggestion that some of the "unknown" entries could be problematic and would therefore seek your advice please.

hi ppbrec1,

your hjt log looks ok. those files are normal windows OS files. they are safe. you can check them in spybot search and destroy.

a hardware router and software firewall is excellent.

Hi shelf life,

Thanks for the reassurance and having taken the time to look and respond.

It was the "wlbaloon" entry, which I had seen mentioned elsewhere, that had caught my eye and had raised the uncertainty.

Good to know it presents no problem.

Thanks again,

Peter
