View Full Version : Outlook: A program is trying to access e-mail addresses

This just started on Friday - Feb 9, 2007. I am using a Linksys wireless hub at home that is plugged into my DSL modem. I am not using wireless; rather I have an Ethernet cable running directly to the hub. I initiate VPN in order to connect to my company's network (Exchange server).

Everytime I create a new message, forward a message or reply to a message, I get a dialog box telling me that "A program is trying to access e-mail addresses you have stored in Outlook". It happens even if I don't have the VPN started and even if I am running Outlook offline (not connected).

I ran Spybot, updating the definitions and re-immunizing, which found a cookie. I chose to fix that problem. Following the instructions in "BEFORE you POST", I ran the TrendMicro virus scan. It found a few more tracking cookies. I re-ran it and it came up clean.

I then booted into Safe Mode and ran Spybot again. It came up clean. I downloaded HiJackThis and ran it. I've posted the log below.

The only thing I can think of is that the most recent Microsoft Update that I applied might have messed up Outlook. I suspect the program that "is trying to access e-mail addresses" is Outlook itself. Any help you can provide me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

I un-installed Plaxo and the problem went away. The latest Microsoft update must have treated the Plaxo add-in as a foreign invader.

Sure would have been nice if Outlook message actually identified the program that was accessing the addresses by name.

Problem solved (I wasn't much of a Plaxo user anyway).
