Hi, welcome to Safer Networking forums!

I can't see any traces of smitfraud in your log..How did you come up with the conclusion that you have it?

*Please follow the instrcutions HERE (http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=si_virus&message.id=42328) on how to remove Dell's MyWay.

*Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the items I listed in bold if found.

Ladbrokes Poker

Programs like the above could bring malware on your system..Although the program itself may be clean, the site where you play those programs are risky because they might bring along malware with them when you play..I suggest that you uninstall both of those if you don't play them.

Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.

Empty your recycle bin.

Reboot into Safe Mode.

To enter Safe Mode..

Click Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart > Tap F8 key just before Windows starts to load, > This will bring up a Menu > Use your keyboard to scroll to Safe Mode> Hit enter.

*Important: Make sure all your browsers are closed before running ATF Cleaner..

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

Click Firefox at the top and choose:Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click
No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE:If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Please run AVG AntiSpyware, and run a full scan as follow:

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG AntiSpyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.

Launch AVG AntiSpyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
AVG AntiSpyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save Report As" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system. (Make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close AVG AntiSpyware.
Reboot to normal mode.


On your next reply, please include a fresh HijackThis log, AVG antispyware log.

after suspecting i had a virus/spyware
i did a scan with spybot S&D and it said i had smitfraud-c. which had changed the desktop wallpaper of my partners profile, after fixing the problem with spybot . but the desktop wallpaper cant b changed back. so i think i still have smitfraud-c

No..You may have clicked "save report" before clicking the "apply all actions" button..Do the AVG scan again in safe mode and this time, make sure click the "apply all actions" button first before "save report"

After that,

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://72.232.135.12/siri/SmitfraudFix.php) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

1.) You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

2.) Reboot into Safe Mode.

To enter Safe Mode..

Click Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart > Tap F8 key just before Windows starts to load, > This will bring up a Menu > Use your keyboard to scroll to Safe Mode> Hit enter.

3.) Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".


The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log and the AVG antispyware log
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

afterall of the above i had a look on my gf's profile, and there was still the windows 98 setup with regards to wallpaper and functions.........so i tried changing the theme back to XP again, logged in and out and reverted back to Windows 98 classic..............is there more to do or shud i just delete her profile?? will deleting her profile get rid of smitfraud-c completely

Hi, let's try this..

1. Right-click an empty space on the desktop, and then click Properties.
2. On the Themes tab, select Windows XP in the Theme box.
3. If this option is missing, you may choose Browse... to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Luna.theme
4. The Luna.theme is the theme of the Windows XP.
5. Click OK.

There are several other Firewall that can protect you better by filtering incoming and outgoing data. Make sure you get only one of these.
