View Full Version : Removing 7FaSSt

7FaSSt appears after every scan, I always remove the pesky critter but it keeps coming back.

After removing the malware yet again I did a Spybot scan after normal start up, and again in safe mode, it didn’t reappear. After a surfing session another scan found it, so maybe it’s not hiding on my hard disk and making selected appearances?

As instructed I have done an online A/V scan (eTrust) and a ‘HighjackThis’ scan, I also scanned with my normal A/V program (AVG free), both programs found nothing. I don’t understand the results of the HighjackThis scan, the first is with 7FaSSt on the computer, and the next is after Spybot removed it.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, if you have not resolved your issues, have you looked here?
http://www.safer-networking.com/remove7FaSSt.php
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=GGLG%2CGGLG%3A2006-16%2CGGLG%3Aen&q=remove+7FaSSt+&btnG=Search

A look at your HJT shows a real nasty running:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [] "c:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe"
Trojan.Webus.F connects to an IRC server and opens a back door on the compromised computer.
Information here: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-16,GGLG:en&q=WEBUS%2eF+TROJAN

You have other junk running also: C:\Program Files\DAP\
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/d/dap.exe.htm

I suggest you update your Antivirus program and run a complete scan removing what it locates, if it does not remove that trojan, then do this.

Follow the instructions in the link, delete or at least quarantine anything located. Post the scan results along with a new HJT log that is run after a reboot so the changes can take effect.

Thanks

Hi pskelley and thanks for replying.

Still no luck, I did as you suggested but spybot still picks it up on a scan. I did look at how to manually remove it but for my level of knowhow it's too easy to send my pc up in flames!

Anyway, here are the logs...

You are welcome, let's hope I can help. These supposedly "legitimate" programs that are normally downloaded on purpose, most often bundled with other stuff and the EULA is not read, can be the hardest to remove. Let me see if it's installed first:
Start HiJackThis
Press 'Config'
Press 'Misc Tools'
Press 'Open Uninstall Manager'
Press 'Save List'
Save the log to a convenient location
Copy the log and post its contents in this thread.

This item: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Debug bind] C:\DOCUME~1\Steve\APPLIC~1\BLEH4T~1\tray book.exe looks suspiciously like LOP, see this information:
http://www.superadblocker.com/P/PROGRAM%20BOOK.EXE-3755.html
If you do not know what it is, you can scan it here: http://virusscan.jotti.org/
before we run the LOP removal tool.

Still no luck, I did as you suggested but spybot still picks it up on a scan. I did look at how to manually remove it but for my level of knowhow it's too easy to send my pc up in flames!I never looked at those manual instructions but I am sure they include an edit of your registry. While I do not like to suggest that, it is sometimes the only way and is safe as long as a backups of the registry is made and one is careful. We will see what happens.

I don't know why it's saying 'ignored', they are all quarantined.
Run AVG Anti-Spyware again and post the results, I need to see the stuff is gone.

I will mention I see a lot of what look like freeware programs, please be aware junk is often bundled with this stuff and the EULA agreement should be read carefully before installing. Free just does not happen.

I suggest you do this:

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall DAP, also uninstall any other program you know does not belong there.

4) Turn off TeaTimer, it will block the changes we must make:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

5) AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O16 - DPF: {BE833F39-1E0C-468C-BA70-25AAEE55775E} -

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

c:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe <<< delete that file

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\DAP\ <<< delete that folder

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the AVG Anti-Spyware scan results, a new HJT log, the uninstall list, any information I requested, and any comments you think will help.

Thanks

None of them were there.

Even though I didn’t find them where you suggested I did a search for csrss.exe and it found 2 entries, one in system32, and the other in system32/dllcache. With the cursor hovering over them they say they’re from Microsoft, shall I remove them?

I hope I've done everything you asked!

Now I've removed DAP I need a good (freeware?) D/L manager, any ideas?

Even though I didn’t find them where you suggested I did a search for csrss.exe and it found 2 entries, one in system32, and the other in system32/dllcache. With the cursor hovering over them they say they’re from Microsoft, shall I remove them? No, leave those alone, if you are ever in doubt, use one or more of these scanners to be sure the item is bad:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

Uninstall list: I'm looking for security issues or malware. It's also a good chance for you to look for program you no longer use.
I can see no problems in the uninstall list.

In the same folder as tray book I found these as well….
Qnhnbepz.exe
Jfwujiau.exe
Setup wait dog.exe
That is LOP, it looks like you removed the folder but we should run the NoLop tool to be sure.

Please download NoLop to the Desktop from one of these links:
http://www.spywareedge.net/nolop/NoLop.exe
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item16

Close any programs you have running since a reboot is required
Double click NoLop.exe to run it
Next, click the button labeled: Search and Destroy
<<your computer will now be scanned for infected files>>
When the scan finishes, if infected, you are prompted to reboot
Click OK

Now click: REBOOT
A Message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish.
Please Post the contents of C:\NoLop.log along with a new HijackThis log

(hold those logs until we finish)

TeaTimer off

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Restart the computer and let me look at one more HJT log. Please post your comments and let me know how the computer is running.

How do you like the VX3000, I am looking for a new WebCam.

Oh dear, it's all gone pear shaped!

No Lop didn't find anything so no log. I removed the O2-BHO and now Messenger has disappeared from the system tray! I used HJT to restore O2-BHO, rebooted but Messenger still won't show in the tray, how can I get it back> I've since removed O2-BHO again, here are the before and after logs...

Apart from losing messenger from the system tray, the computer is working normaly. I did another scan with spybot but the little sod is still there!

I've only had the VX3000 a few days, and only used it while chatting once. It seems ok, nice, clear picture, 1.3MP stills from it, but the auto face tracking tracks very close to your face, so I've turned it off.

I removed the O2-BHO and now Messenger has disappeared from the system tray! I used HJT to restore O2-BHO, rebooted but Messenger still won't show in the tray, how can I get it back> I've since removed O2-BHO again, here are the before and after logs...That BHO was a dead line left from the DAP removal, had nothing to do with Messenger( I assume you are talking about this: C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\) Please spell everything out since we are communicating like this.
I also only need to see one HJT log. Produce it after all instructions are complete and a restart has been done.

are these what you are talking about?
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\usnsvc.exe <<< is this a Beta?

Have you consider updating to Windows Live Messenger?

You have a few programs I do not recognize but they look valid. Take a look at all of the programs in your HJT log and make sure you know them all.

I did another scan with spybot but the little sod is still there!) <<< spell it out, I am working on 50 to 60 computers online at the same time. I don't know what to do with this one, can you tell me what Spybot has to say about it? Where located, any info provided at all.

Apart from losing messenger from the system tray, the computer is working normalyWe did nothing to effect that program, try a reboot, all of the changes might have cause it to load badly.

Let me have some feedback about the above and we will consider any next moves.

Thanks

I have and use live messenger, which entry is which I don’t know, one is live messenger and the other the previous version?
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\usnsvc.exe <<< is this a Beta?

There isn’t anything in the HJT log that I don’t recognise.

After I’ve followed your instructions I usually do a Spybot scan, and it’s still picking up the 7FaSSt malware. This is where Spybot says it is…

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-329068152-1606980848-725345543-1004\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{669695BC-A811-4A9D-8CDF-BA8C795F261C}

I’ll try another reboot and hope messenger comes back to the tray.

Thanks

Here's the google on that CLSID number:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=669695BC-A811-4A9D-8CDF-BA8C795F261C&btnG=Google+Search

I suggest you return here: http://www.safer-networking.com/remove7FaSSt.php
and follow the directions. That CLSID number is on the list of instructions.

Here are instructions for backing up the registry:
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=68037

I can also provide a freeware registry editor if you would rather use that. I can tell you from experience, if you make a backup and follow the directions carefully making sure you have a quiet uninterrupted time in which to work, you will have no problems.

Hope that helps.

Well I edited the registry, I couldn't find some of the entries but removed what I did find. Lots of reboots and surfing, lots of A/V, spyware and spybot scans.......and nothing! It looks like it's finally gone, all thanks to you.

Thanks for the feedback and that is good to hear, just a little more to do and you will be on your way. The tools you used and we used probably removed some of the junk, but enough was left to cause the issues.

You have programs I am not 100% sure are safe, I will list them and if you are not sure, then I suggest you uninstall them:
C:\Program Files\Smart Shutdown\Smart Shutdown.exe
C:\Program Files\IObit\IObit SmartDefrag\IObit SmartDefrag.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\POP-UP~1\PSFree.exe
C:\Program Files\MyWxThing\MyWxThing.exe
C:\Program Files\Time Synchronizer\timesync.exe
Keep in mind freeware programs are often bundled with problems, that's how they get $$. Be sure to always read the EULA carefully for those as well as all other programs.

Proceed like this:

Turn off TeaTimer

AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5: Deactivate the Resident Shield

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\System\panels\blank.htm
O16 - DPF: {215B8138-A3CF-44C5-803F-8226143CFC0A} (Trend Micro ActiveX Scan Agent 6.6) - http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/ho...vex/hcImpl.cab
O16 - DPF: {BE833F39-1E0C-468C-BA70-25AAEE55775E} -

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

I've used all these programs for a long time, except for 'smartdefrag'. I'm not 100% sure but I think 7FaSSt appeared about the same time as I installed 'smartdefrag', so I think I'll remove it.

C:\Program Files\Smart Shutdown\Smart Shutdown.exe
C:\Program Files\IObit\IObit SmartDefrag\IObit SmartDefrag.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\POP-UP~1\PSFree.exe
C:\Program Files\MyWxThing\MyWxThing.exe
C:\Program Files\Time Synchronizer\timesync.exe

I couldn't find this one.....

Thanks for the feedback, I was removing the 016 DPF becuase it looked damaged, this is what it is:
System Requirements Lab L \{BE833F39-1E0C-468C-BA70-25AAEE55775E} sysreqlab.cab Related to System_Requirements_Lab looks at your computer's hardware and system software to determine whether or not your current system can run a product.

You can remove it or leave it, your call.

I did a scan by Microsoft a couple of weeks ago, to determine if I can run Vista home premium, I can't until I upgrade from shared graphics to a proper graphics card. That is probably where it comes from. Now I know what I have to do for Vista I'm happy to remove it, if I can see it, which I can't!

Occasionally AVG picks up a virus in the restore files, so I remove them and start again anyway, it's no problem to remove them again.
