HijackThis.exe s*** itself on first launch

i followed instructions on downloading HijackThis.exe but when i double clicked the icon everything on my desktop disappeared for a few seconds and then slowly reappeared. i went to try again and as soon as my mouse pointer moved over the icon the same thing happened!! does anyone know why or why the program didn't launch? thanks for any help.
