View Full Version : Help I can't get RID of Update Manager
Hi there, New to these forums. I have a virus, worm or trojen that isn't being picked up by my virus checkers or picked up by any of the following that I have used. Spyware Doctor, Spysweeper, Nortons, Xoftspy, RegCure. What is happening is a window message appears asking me to update manager, stupidly thought sure ok do that, did it and now I can't get rid of it. I can't even click start to close my computer down without that update manager box showing up every time I click cancel it just shows up over and over and it is now frustrating me. Please some one help me get rid of this before I drastically format my hard drive :)
Has someone managed to work out what I'm stuck with regards to my first post? Please???

Hi and sorry for the delay.
You got something that needs cleaning....
You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.
At first you need to disable a few realtime protections. These may interfere with our cleaning process.
We'll enable these when you're clean...
Disable SpySweeper's realtime protection.
Open Spysweeper and click on Options
Choose Program Options and uncheck "load at windows startup".
On the left click "shields" and then uncheck everything.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".
Exit the program.
Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.

Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/).
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.
Download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.
Do NOT run yet.

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.

Restart your computer to the safe mode:
Restart your computer
Start tapping the F8 key when the computer restarts.
When the start menu opens, choose Safe mode
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Use the Windows search Start
Search
All files and folders
More advanced options Checkmark these options: "Search system folders"
"Search hidden files and folders"
"Search subfolders"
Search for this and delete if found: msldr32.dll
Run ATF Cleaner Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware and run a full scan.
Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
Click on the Settings tab.
Under How to act?
Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
Under How to scan?
All checkboxes should be ticked.
Under Possibly unwanted software:
All checkboxes should be ticked.
Under Reports:
Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
Under What to scan?
Select Scan every file.
Click on the Scan tab.
Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
Let the program scan the machine.
When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.
Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)

When done, click the Save Scan Report button. (4)
Click the Save Report as button.
Save the report to your Desktop.
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
Reboot in Normal Mode.

I would like to point out that when in Safe Mode I was unable to get the search to work, for what ever reason it just wouldn't open up the search so I was unable to search for the dll that you requested I do. Hi there
Each time I load up windows the box shows up, each time you click cancel it repeats itself over and over. I"m attaching a screen shot of the three errors.
I can't even close down my computer without having to hit cancel 20 odd times and then quickly shut down the computer.
It looks just like a normal update manager box except if you click to update and do the updates it does not Go away, instead it continues to do the same thing over and over and nothing so far has been able to remove it?
While trying to surf the web, play a game or do emails or even post in this forums it always pops up asking me to update manager so I am having to constantly hit cancel.
Sorry it also follows through with this Windvd here is a screen shot of that one same thing over and over repeat after hittin cancel just repeats then goes back to doing the update manager one!

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.

Hi,
I have newer versions of the download you sent me to **that is what it told me after valaditing, then downloading the link** I thought I had but did it any ways to double check. This MSI error is coming up when I boot up the computer and is also there when I load up Microsfoft Word no other programs are having this error coming up. I have re-installed microsoft word but still the program boots up with computer and trying to open MW.

Once the short scan has finished, you should now mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.

I saved the log as requested from cureit it's called drweb.csv but I tried to attach it to this and it's not permitting that csv as a known file to be uploaded as an attachment. I then tried to double click on it to open it but nothing I have on my machine will read it gave me the option to open it with online web so clicked ok. It hang IE **which is nothing new as IE seems to hang for me regular lately** So I'm stuck with how to show you this log?

I'm getting a little confused how is it that different virus checkers are finding trojans etc I started thinking that my machine was finally clean then done what you asked and found another as you can see by the report above! It didn't solve the problem though as each time I load my machine up the problem is still there.

Well different scanners find different things..these were just leftovers...
You have two (2) antiviruses installed and running, Sophos Anti-Virus and Norton. Running more that one antivirus at the same time may cause all kinds of problems and is NOT recommended.
You should leave only one (1) antivirus running. You should uninstall/disable either Sophos Anti-Virus or Norton. When you have decided, you can uninstall your choice through Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs..
Please notice that if your Norton includes a firewall and you decide to remove Norton, You must install a new firewall too. In that case these are good and free firewalls:Sunbelt-Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm), ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/), Sygate (http://http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3356), Outpost (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1056)
We could try to clean the registry and see if it helps :)
Backup your registry:
Start
Run
Type the following to the box and hit Ok: regedit
A window opens, click on File
Choose Export form the menu
Change the save location to C:\
Give the filename, RegBackUp
Make sure that the filetype is set to Registryfiles (*.reg)
Click on Save and Close the window
Download and install CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloadpage.aspx?f=2)
Run the program -> Issues -> Scan for issues, when ready click on "Fix selected issues", Click Yes and save the file to C-drive, Click on "Fix all selected issues" -> Click "Ok"
Please also post a fresh HijackThis startuplist.

Hi there,
It didn't help and when I do click on add/remove programs wait for it to load up then find the program I wish to delete it says Are you sure you want to delete such and such! Only problem is no matter what program I click on it asks for the same program to be deleted. For example click to remove sophos and it confirms for you to remove spyware doctor. Click to remove eudora pro and it confirms for you to remove spyware doctor. No matter which program is selcted as soon as you click remove it does the confirm but it always shows up as spyware doctor and not the program you wish to delete.
Is that some other trojen or virus?? Should I just format the machine to save everyone time?

Have you tried to uninstall SpyywareDoctor?
