to check what service is using svchost in xp try this: dont know if this works in home version

1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type CMD, and then press ENTER.
3. Type Tasklist /SVC, and then press ENTER.

maybe i should boot linux iam in linux now (pclinuxos TR2)
those items are all part of windows OS.
i would shut down some services that arent needed.

can you do a scan with avg anitmalware, save the report after the scan, then post the report in next reply.

launch avg:
select the "Scanner" icon at the top of
the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then
select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"

* Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
* Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

# Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
then click on "Complete System Scan".
# ewido will now begin the scanning process

Once the scan is complete do the following:
# If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all
actions"
# Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
# Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the
screen and save it to a text file on your system. post saved reprot back here

its possible that the real time avg anitspyware protection component or "guard" is using resources and bogging you down.
