View Full Version : Persistant computer slowdowns

trendless

I've been trying to several weeks to determine the cause of slowdowns on my laptop. I've run every possible scan -- spyware, virus, rootkit -- and I cannot seem to find the root of the problem. I do notice that rootkit scans will bring up quite a few entries, but as for identifying rogue items; I'm way in over my head. I've also done hardware scans which it has past, even so far as booting into a linux live distro without any of the noticeable chugging and freezing that are present in Windows XP. Any ideas?

These are the Gmer logs as well... sorry I had to zip the one; way too big to fit on here.

My apologies about the really horrible grammar in the first post. Guess I was preoccupied.

Hello and sorry for the wait.

If you have not resolved the problem, we have this sticky topic:

If you have waited four days for advice post here. (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?p=4836#post4836)

Hi again :)

The logs look clean, one leftover.

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.

Slowness isn't always malware related. You could go through the following list -> Link (http://www.castlecops.com/postitle175256-0-0-.html)
(The link should work soon)

Let me know if it helped :bigthumb:

Ok, but I coulda told you it wasn't anything that HijackThis was reporting that is the problem. Virus scans are clean too. However, rootkit detection programs like Gmer and Rootkit Revealer usually bring up all sorts of entries (as I mentioned in my first post). D'you know about that or know someone who does that could shed some light on it? Obviously there is something not quite right with the computer; I've done all the hardware tests etc and they don't turn up anything. What else could it be?

Hi :)

The GMER log is clean, not all the entries that come up in scans are bad. You could post that RootkitRevealer log to here if you want.

We could also run an additional scan but I don't expect to find anything...

Make a new folder in the C:\drive called silentrunners
Download 'silent runners" from here: (direct download)
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.vbs
Save it to your silentrunners folder.

Click start> run> type cmd and hit enter
Type the following exactly and hit enter after each line.
cd c:\silentrunners and hit enter
"silent runners.vbs" -all and hit enter

Wait until it pops up saying its completed, then post the resulting logfile here
It will be very large. You may need several posts to include everything

Thanks for your patience helping me.

Here's the log from silent runners.

Nothing bad there.

Did you check this list (http://www.castlecops.com/postitle175256-0-0-.html)?
