View Full Version : pop ups won't go away

John Mitchell
2007-02-21, 14:51
Hi, I keep getting pop-ups when I am using my internet explorer, these range from insurance adverts to virus-protection adverts to Crazygirls adverts. I have run adaware, spybot and AVG but am still getting the pop-ups (and I have a pop-up blocker on my browser), some of them are blank. Below is my hijack this log

Welcome to the forum, If you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, I will see what I can do. Since I see no antivirus scan results, it appears you missed this information Pinned to the top of this forum:
"BEFORE you POST" -Preliminary Steps
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
Please read that information and make sure you have followed it all. I may need the antivirus scan done, since I see nothing in the HJT log and will let you know. I would like you to do this.

1) You are running HJT.exe from a .zip file in a Temporary Directory. This is unsafe as we will have no backups. That is why you received this message when you used HJT: http://russelltexas.com/malware/images/unsafefolder.gif
Please use the information in the following link to place HJT in a permanent, safe folder, I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
When you have it move, then point your mouse at the HijackThis.exe and click rename. Call it John Mitchell.exe or whatever you wish. The next HJT log should show us if we are dealing with a hidden Vundo infection.

2) You have AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 onboard, use the information in the following link to run it as instructed, make sure you delete or at least quarantine anything located and save the scan report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

Restart the computer and post that scan report and a new HJT log. Include any comments you think will help.

Thanks

John Mitchell

Thanks for the advice, I have followed your instructions and the reports are below.

The pop ups I get are not in normal browser windows, there is no URL bar etc. Some of the popups are blank but most are adverts, they normally open when I a going to a new page or when I open a new tab. There is a whole range of different adverts.

I ran a Panda online virus check and got the following report

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/navipromo Not disinfected c:\windows\system32\fmdcjafgdc_nav.dat

I also ran AVG, it detected no files, the log is below

Hello John, first thing you can do for us is post only what I request. If I need it, I will ask for it, and that will make the topic easier to work with....thanks.

This is a nasty: Adware:Adware/NaviPromo it runs as a rootkit, we may as well let Blacklight have a look.
http://www.f-secure.com/sw-desc/navipromo.shtml

Please download F-Secure BlackLight Beta:
https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/index.shtml

Save it to its own folder in the Desktop
Double-click blbeta.exe to run the program
Click : Scan
A list of all items found is created

The list is in the BlackLight folder on the Desktop, and named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx are numbers).

Please provide the log created by BlackLight in your next reply.

AVG Anti-Spyware would not show the rootkit, though they have a tool to remove them if we need it, let's see if we can kill it with Blaicklight.

All I need now is the Blacklight log.

Thanks

John Mitchell

You can see the hidden junk now, please review this tutorial so you will know what you are doing, then follow the directions to clean the infection. Once that is done, run and post a HJT log and a new Blacklight log. Let me know how the computer is performing when you post those logs.

Thank you so much for your help, I have deleted the files picked up by BlackLight and since then I haven't had any problems with popups! My HJT and BlackLight logs are below (the newest BlackLight scan didn't pick up any files).

Thanks John for for returning your information. One more nasty to get rid of.
First, I do see stuff running at every bootup you may not need, look at this information: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/

Let's finish up like this:
How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [fmdcjafgdc] c:\windows\system32\fmdcjafgdc.exe fmdcjafgdc

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

c:\windows\system32\fmdcjafgdc.exe <<< delete that folder

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

You need to be running one good anti-virus program, one good firewall and at least one good realtime spyware program. Since I see none, read what the experts have to say. Here is one you can consider that is free:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

I ran the HJT and deleted the file, I have shown all hidden files but cannot find C:\WINDOWS\system32\fmdcjafgdc.exe. I haven't followed any of the other steps yet because of this, what do you advise? Thanks
John

Thanks for the feedback, please ask Search Companion to have a look. First let me give you another look at how to enable hidden files and folders, if this is not done correctly, Seach Companion may not find the file even if is there:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Start > Search > All Files and Folder > Copy and Paste c:\windows\system32\fmdcjafgdc.exe into the Search box and click Search. Be patient, I have seen it take 15 to 20 minutes at times for the search to complete. Once you are 100% positive Search Companion can not find the file, then compete the instructions and enjoy your computer.

Thanks

I followed the instructions on hidden files and searched both manually and with search companion but did not find the file. I did notice that the file name for this process was exactly the same as the file name of one of the hidden files found by balcklight, which I renamed and removed (C:\windows\system32\fmdcjafgdc.exe). I have followed the rest of your instructions and have gone to the links for security and start up etc. I am running Norton internet security, which has a firewall and adware protection, I also have Adaware and Spybot. Thank you for all your help, my computer seems to be running great again now,
John.

That's true John, when we renamed with Blacklight the hidden file shows up in HJT. I wanted to be postive it was gone and that appears to be the case. A pleasure working with you sir:bigthumb: Safe Surfing...Phil
