Hi all.
Just ran windows malicious software removal tool, and it tells me i have a backdoor:win32/Rbot.gen. cant seem to get rid of it with any anti-spyware/anti vrus i've tried.
My computer also appears to freeze a lot more than it used to.

Win32.Rbot.EEU is an IRC controlled backdoor (or "bot") that can be used to gain unauthorized access to a victim's machine. It can also exhibit worm-like functionality by exploiting weak passwords on administrative shares and by exploiting many different software vulnerabilities, as well as backdoors created by other malware.
Because your security has been badly breeched, I need to provide this information for you.
You're infected, one or more of the identified infections steal information. If this system is used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately by using a different computer (not the infected one!) to make the changes. Banking and credit card institutions, if any, should be notified of the possible security breech. I suggest that you read this information also:

I was considering formatting my computer and starting again, however if this worm can be gotten rid of i would prefer to do that.
I have avoided using any online banking since i've had this worm, so all should be ok on that front. gonna go to my mates and change all my passwords now.
So please help me get rid of this irritating worm.
p.s. think this forum is excellent, and volunteer helpers are gods (like antibiotics for our pus-filled infections).:D:

Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.
1) Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

having read the articles you recommended i woould appreciate your advice on whether i should just re-format my computer.
I have been running zone-alarm and avg free edition the whole time.
However i am not the only user and cannot be sure that my family have used the firewall appropriately.
have a lot of films/music on the computer, and dont want to go through making back-ups of all that unless it's really necessary.
What would you advise?

Thanks for returning the information, let's look at the HJT log first. Looks like you have word wrap turned on, please clcick Format at the top of Notepad and uncheck "Word Wrap", my scanners can not work well with formatted HJT log.

I suggest you do this:
1) Your Java program is out of date, see this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Update to the newest version and uninstall all old version in Add Remove programs.
While you are there, look for C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\ << uninstall that program
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post a new HJT log for a final check, tell me about any malware issues.
Uninstall list. I am not trying to to tell you how to run your computer, these are suggestions. The programs that deal with security or malware I will mark plainly, other than that, do what you wish with the suggestions. It's a great opportunity to look for programs you no longer use.
Viewpoint Media Player: see this information >> For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

Thanks, I have a bad habit of removing the junk more than once to be sure. You HJT log looks to be clean of malware. Since I see you are running GoogleDesktop, I will share a video I just picked up today:

As far as the P2P file sharing, I have heard of two many exploits that can get though even if you save the file and scan it before opening it. My suggestion is that you deal with a reputable company and pay for your product.

No problem, I will do what I can. First I will say the HJT log looks fine. Your only comment was
"Still freezes occassional" I want you to know my computers (three) are all in tip top shape and they freeze occasionally. Are you receiving any error messages? What happens is we bring the computer home and it is working perfectly, then we proceed to download all kind of programs, often questionable junk. Then we proceed to allow the computer to pick up nasty infections that have to be removed...and yet our expectation is that they will run like new. That is not going to happen. If you want the computer to run like new, your best chance of that is to reformat and return it to as close to the original condition as possible. Having said that, let's try a few thing:

This item: UPNP.exe does not appear to be showing in the HJT log at all. What program is saying it is there? Here is the Google on that worm:

it's zone alarm telling me that upnp.exe is trying to connect to the internet.
I got it when downloading bitcomet 0.84. But nothing seems to pick it up. even the fix you gave me a link to.
Maybe i'm not infected then?
Dont know if you have any ideas/suggestions?

Yeah, quit downloading junk, my only suggestion from where is am setting is to enable hidden files and folders:

search for the junk and delete it manually, even if you have to do it in safe mode:
