View Full Version : Is my computer hopelessly broken?

Every time I restart my computer, I get a message saying that nvcpll (or something) can't be accessed because it's in use by another program. Then the computer keeps working okay. However, when I try to use SpyBot, I get nothing but a list of errors. (I've seen this error mentioned in other posts, but this is NOT transient--it happens every single time, through restarts, etc.) Ad-Aware freezes and can't complete a check.

I'm running Windows XP. There isn't anything hugely wrong with my computer, but this worries me. I probably wouldn't have noticed if not for the start-up error and the fact that I run spyware programs frequently just to check.

Could you give the exact error message received after you next bootup. :)

Also please open Spybot>Help>About
Let us know the version and latest detection update.

Error message:
Windows could not access NvCpl. The file is already in use by another program.

I'm using Spybot version 1.4, and my latest detection update was 2007-2-21.

I'm getting a similar error (to the spybot one) with a registry cleaner I tried (it stops running when it encounters this error). I tried a disk defrag, and that hasn't accomplished much. I also followed suggestions for deleting the files in my Windows Temp folder.

If you have any suggestions, I really appreciate it. :)

Hello.

Apprantly you are reporting three programs that experience this problem.

SpyBot-S&D, a registry cleaner and Ad-Aware.

NvCpl.dll is the Nvidia Control Panel.

However if the Filename is NvCpl.EXE it might indicate an infection.

In order for someone to make an analysis, please follow the procedure in this link: "BEFORE you POST" -Preliminary Steps (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

Then start your own thread in the Malware Removal Forum (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22)

A helper will advise you as soon as available. Cheers.
