2) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

... by the way, thanks for the super quick turnaround... you have a happy and nervous student here! After the last steps I performed, I do not see any balloons popping up from my task bar, and the Protection bar toolbar is gone... starting to look pretty good! :)

Please continue with that Smitfraudfix: http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
Restart the computer so the changes can go into effect, then create and post a new HJT log along with the report.txt from Smitfraudfix.

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner

Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let mw know how the computer is running.

Here ia what I did... I ran Smitfraudfix, and cleaned the registry, but never got asked about wininet.dll, I also restored my Trusted and Restricted site zone, don't have SpywareBlaster nor IE_SPYAD (at least not to my knowledge :-)..), I then deactivated Teatimer and the AVG resident shield, and downloaded ATF Cleaner, followed by HJT, where I checked the boxes for the 1 entries you listed,and finally an ATF Cleaner, and ran HJT for the last time.

... By the way, all seems normal on my laptop, no Protetion bar toolar, no balloons on the task bar, and speed seems completely back to my normal... any additional precautions I should take do you think?

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Good to hear all is back to normal, I suggest you do this now.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

I want you to know we are all volunteers which is the case at most forums, and we have no set schedules. Helpers here are located all over the earth, and we help when we can. In my case I am in Clearwater, Florida USA EST. I boot my computer between 4 and 5 AM EST and give a good bit of my time helping others such as youself. After around 15 hours, usually about 8PM EST I turn off a very tired computer.

Hi PS Kelley!!! All seems to be fixed now, and this thanks to you! I know you, like all others, are volunteers, which means you GIVE time to help others. I understand that, and I REALLY appreciate what you, and people like you, do here. If by writing this little note at the end of your last reply, you were eluding to the fact that I sent a private message to Joshi on Sunday asking if she could help, after I had noticed that you were not on-line anymore while she was still on-line at the time, well let me tell you that I was only looking for an expert opinion right then on Sunday evening, since my son was leaving very early the following Monday morning to go back to his University, and start his mid-term exams, and I wanted to make sure he got a clean bill of health for his laptop at that specific time, i.e. Sunday evening.
