View Full Version : Help-Google Redirect Virus
Please help -
I have a virus on my system that redirects me to strange sites when I click on google search results. I've tried sweeping with Norton, spysweeper, adaware, avgantispyware - none have helped. After reading some old threads it seems that others have had the same problem
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks so much

Welcome to the forum, If you still need help, could you get rid of all those 018Logitech Messenger lines for us? See this:
1) For your information, all of the 018 items in the log are the result of the Logitech Desktop Messenger which gets installed along with another Logitech program because the EULA agreement is not read. Unless you know what it is and use it, it is a resource waster and can be removed in Add Remove programs, but make sure you uninstall only what I highlite in red, this is optional:
C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\ <<< uninstall only the program in red.
2) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint
3) You are running HJT.exe from a .zip file in a Temporary Directory. This is unsafe as we will have no backups. That is why you received this message when you used HJT: http://russelltexas.com/malware/images/unsafefolder.gif
Please use the information in the following link to place HJT in a permanent, safe folder, I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
4) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.
5) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
6) Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.
(hold those logs and reports until we finish)
7) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{CA360863-A720-4C3F-A6C5-7938FA541A43}: NameServer = 85.255.113.197,85.255.112.128
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{E641242C-2961-4DA5-BBC2-5635D2F069AF}: NameServer = 85.255.113.197,85.255.112.128
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.113.197 85.255.112.128
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.113.197 85.255.112.128
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post the report.txt from Fixwareout, a new HJT log and your comments. How is the computer running now?
Thanks
Thanks so much for the prompt reply! Am at work all day without access to home computer, but will follow your advice when I get home tonight and see how it works.
First set of logs (after step 6)

Problem seems to be fixed! Tried a number of searches and all the links seemed to work. If the problem comes back I'll post again but as of now I think everything's fine. Can't thank you enough for the help.

Thanks for returning your information, Your HJT log does look clean of malware. ATF-Cleaner should have removed this item when it cleaned, but I wish to be sure it is gone:
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\kdhhv.ren <<< just look in that folder to be sure it is, you can delete the contents of that folder if you wish (not the folder), then let's finish up like this.
Remove any tools we download for the fix, the exception being ATF-Cleaner, you may keep that nice tool if you wish.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam
AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

If you are reading this information...thank a teacher,
If you are reading it in English...thank a soldier.
I'll follow these final steps when home tonight.
If you don't mind my asking: previously I was running Norton anti-virus and Spysweeper to protect my system. Obviously they failed to do so in this instance. What is your opinion on these programs? Are there others that you'd recommend instead?
Thanks again.

I do not run either program so it is hard for me to comment. I have used SpySweeper on a trail basis to remove malware. All I can say is that they both have good reputations. I can also say that no program will stop all malware and that most malware gets on a computer as a direct result of a user. When we finish, I will post links from experts that might better answer your questions.
Thanks
Just to clarify,
To make sure my system restore files are clean, I simply turn them off, reboot my computer, and then turn them back on?
