View Full Version : Another xlibgfl254.dll victim
I've been getting the "xlibgfl254.dll is not a valid windows image" (along with the computer address leading to "System 32") for a few days now. So far, nothing seems to have been disabled or lost yet, but I still need to get it off before I do lose anything. I discovered this site after Googling "xlibgfl254.dll" because it sounded like it was a virus, so I wanted to make sure, and it turns out it is, so I was wondering if anyone could help me with this? From what I've seen, it seems like a long and staggering process to remove it, but I need to get it off, so could anyone help me out? I know virtually nothing of this kind of thing. =/
What exactly is this "HijackThis" thing, and what do I need to do with it? Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum, what she expected you to do was to read and follow the instructions which you have not done or you would have posted the online virus scan results requested in the instructions. You may wait on that, I will let you know if I need it.
You have a marker that indictes a Smitfraud infection, we need to check for it before we reomove this:

1) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from there and follow ONLY these directions:
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
2) Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.
1) Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
Include the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix, the report from SDFix and a new HJT log along with any comments you think will help.

Thanks For returning your information, we have more work to do to finish the cleanup, but I need a couple of things from you before I proceed.
Notepad: click Format and uncheck "Word Wrap" if it is checked, so it will not format the information.

SDFix did remove some of the junk, but Smitfraudfix found some that needs to go, please follow these directions:

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
Restart the computer and post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix and a new HJT log.

Mozilla Firefox (1.5.0.10) <<< this program is outdated and a security risk, if you are going to run it I suggest you update to the newest version.

Thanks again for the help.
I was unaware of the Viewpoint Media Player thing, thanks for pointing that out. I removed it. I also updated Java and Firefox and removed the "Trusted zones" thing as well. And sorry about the boldening thing. It seems that I accidentally pressed Ctrl+B before pushing Ctrl+V on each of the logs, which automatically bolded them. My apologies, I'll make sure that doesn't happen again.

Thanks for returning your information and your feedback, let's see if I can wrap this up for you now.
First thing I notice this morning and I apologize for not noticing it before is that Smitfraudfix is and old version. It has to be constantly updated as the hackers change their junk. I posted a link to the newest version? Please uninstall all Smitfraud Fix and download then run the "Search" function again and post that report.

I will also point out that thought the instructions say this:
Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually) You ran the "Clean" function in normal mode? I am going to continue with the balance of the adware, I will be able to better advise you when I see the report from Smitfraudfix version v2.146.
1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post the C:\report.txt from Smitfraudfix "Search" and a new HJT log.

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exeand click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.

I had HJT fix the ntsystem.exe and deleted it, but it came back. I also did the delete on reboot thing, but as that one link you posted said, it comes back everytime the computer starts up or reboots. What do you suggest I do? And what about the xlibgfl254.dll?

Did you bother to look at the information I provided? The first google link is this:

But deletion of the "ntsystem.exe" file doesn't not provide us any success. The file is automatically recreated after reboot. Catty tried to delete "ntsystem.exe" at Windows restart using the newest Greatis Software product called "Partizan". Partizan doesn't use Windows "PendingFileRename key for deleting. It uses own Native API application and Partizan successfully deleted "ntsystem.exe".
xlibgfl254.dll <<< delete that if you can find it, try the delete on reboot tool. It may be what is putting the junk back. I can't do this for you, all I can do is provide the information. That is probably in the C:\Windows\System32 folder, but you may have to search, I don't have one to check.
It may take a registry edit to remove the lines mentioned here:

Ah, I see. Sorry for not paying attention to that link that you posted before. I went to the one you provided, with the RegRun Reanimator thing, and I did what it said, and it seemed to have removed the ntsystem.exe. I also used HJT's "Delete on reboot" feature on the xlibgfl254.dll, and it seems to have gotten rid of it. Is there anything else that you think I may need to do, or is everything fine now?

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
