i think i still have a few problems but i'm unsure what needs to be done...i also ran spybot and got rid of 48 items

Make sure to reboot the computer and post a HJT log that is run after Smitfraudfix. I will have a better idea once I see a new log.
i think i still have a few problems but i'm unsure what needs to be done..This tells me nothing, take the time to describe the problems, tell me about any error message you receive and post them "word for word"

Thanks for returning your information, please follow the instructions carefully and in the numbered order.
1) MSN Instant Messenger, could you tell me what version you are running.
Right click the icon in the System Tray, then click Open Messenger. Click Help at the top then About Messenger. Post the version for me.
2) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.
3) Unless you set the hosts files like that, it looks like you have a corrupt Hosts file. I would like to looks at that file before we try to fix it. Please do this:
To view the Hosts file:
Start -> Run -> Copy the following to the box and hit enter:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS
Open the file with Notepad if you are asked, then click Edit at the top of the Notepad and Select All. Copy and Paste that infomation in your next post.
4) Download the HostsXpert 3.8 - Hosts File Manager (http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip).
Unzip HostsXpert 3.8 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert
Click HostsXpert.exe to Run HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts file and then click OK.
Click the X to exit the program.
Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.
5) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

7) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
8) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\AWS\ <<< delete that folder
9) Follow the instructions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware that you have on the computer. Make sure you delete or at least quarantine any thing located and save the report to post.

10) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post the MSNIM Version, information from the Hosts file, the scan results from AVG Anti-Spyware, a new HJT log and any comments you think wil help.

AVG scan resulted over 8000 tracking cookies located in C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT...deleted all of them...report too long to postMay a see the balance of the report with that junk edited out.
You HJT log looks fine, are you still having problems with Windows Live Messenger? I use it also but I chat only rarely sharing files and the few times I shared music files it was with limited success. You may want to look here:

If the problem continues consider a reinstall.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

windows live messenger just freezes in general when trying to chat with someone. we also have the latest messenger plus installed...could that be part of the problem?

I apologize for not knowing all, though I have WLM installed and running well, I am not an expeet in that program. This is why I gave you the links to support forums where you can seek additional help. My one suggestion would be to uninstall Windows Live Messenger and reinstall the software to see if that fixes the issue. http://support.microsoft.com/ <<< You might also look here. I tried to track through but I just get diverted to my Verizon with MSN Premium account and that is not going to help you.
