View Full Version : Obfuscated Problems - Cannot Download Anything

I recently was infected with the download.obfuskated trojan. AVG caught it and I have attempted to remove, heal, and quarantine it but have only been succesful with portions of it. System restore cannot be run because one of the infections was in the "system volume" folder. I next attempted to download HJT and Avast virus scanner, but found that neither IE or Firefox can download any files now. Firefox says the oject has been blocked and IE gives a http 403 (forbidden) error. Therefore I have been unable to download anything to try and analyze and fix this problem. In addition, I initially attempted to restart my computer with system restore and multiple "windows installer" windows and "instant share devices" windows kept popping up and trying to download. Then then the system configuration utility window opened and the only way I could close anything was to use the "windows task manager" and manually close windows. Please give me some guidance. I am not a complete newbie with registry erros and malware removal, but would definitely consider myself a novice. Thanks for any help.

So I was finally able to bypass some firewall issues and download HJT and the updated version of Spybot S&D. I ran everything in the startup instructions thread and the online antivirus scan. The logs are below.

I also dont remember if I mentioned it in the original post, but all the malware is of course accompanied by a lot of popups.

Thanks for any help you can provide. I would really appreciate it.

Welcome to the forum. Kevin? Since this is several days old, I want to make sure you are not receiving help elsewhere before putting effort into this.
You have a real nasty here: http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.alcra.b.html

W32.Alcra.B is a worm that propagates through file-share networks and attempts to disable several programs on the compromised computer. Which it appears it has done, especially to Norton.

and this one has me wondering?
O16 - DPF: {F5192746-22D6-41BD-9D2D-1E75D14FBD3C} (ddm_download.ddm_control) - http://download.rfwnad.com/cab/crack.CAB
http://www.spywareguide.com/product_show.php?id=706
If illegal software is being downloaded to this computer?

It is hard to tell what kind of junk came along with this worm that we can not see. I will help you clean it up if you will follow directions, and if you will keep the computer offline except when troubleshooting until it is clean.
If you still need help and this works for you, post a new HJT log and I will respond with directions as soon as possible after that.

Thanks

Thanks for the help, and no I have not receieved any help yet. I had to reply to my own post to add info so that probably slowed me down. I will do anything I need to to get rid of this stuff. The Norton thing you speak of puzzles me to since that program should have been deleted from my computer well over a year ago. I use AVG so Norton should not even be on this computer. I have attached a new HJT log. Thanks for any assistance.

Thanks for the new log, I understand you said Norton should not be on the computer. I will show you how to remove that with the rest of the junk after you remove the worm.

Please read and follow the directions carefully. When you run AVG Anti-Spyware it is important that you delete or at least quarantine anything located and save the report to post. Here is a tutorial if it helps:
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

Thanks to Metallica and anyone else who helped with this fix.

1. Please download AVG Anti-Spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)
Install AVG Anti-Spyware
Launch the program, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.

You will need to update AVG Anti-Spyware to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
Exit AVG Anti-Spyware, do not run the scan yet!

2. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller (http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip) to your desktop.
Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
Click "Next"
In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
Click "Browse"
Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
Click on "Local Disk (C: ) or whatever your primary drive is
Click "Make New Folder"
Type in BFU
Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".

3. RIGHT-CLICK HERE (http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu) and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.

4. Once in Safe Mode, Open AVG Anti-Spyware:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close AVG Anti-Spyware

5. Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon http://metallica.geekstogo.com/foldericon.png and select alcanshorty.bfu
Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Reboot into normal windows and post the contents of AVG Anti-Spyware text report that you saved and a new HiJackThis log.

Thanks

Alright. Even though I already had AVG, it was version 7.0 so I went ahead and downloaded 7.5 and ran everything per your instructions. The avg results and a new HJT log are below. Thanks for everything. The popup windows installer windows are still there and going crazy on startup but I suspect we are not nearly to that fix yet.

Are you still using these programs?
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ConMgr.exe] "c:\Program Files\EarthLink 5.0\conmgr.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AWMON] "C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Shared\Ad-Watch.exe"
Post that information for me.

Please follow these directions in the numbered order:

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

4) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to SAVScan and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

also disable this service: Symantec Network Drivers Service

Okay, so I have done a lot and sorry that this will be a long email.

No I do not run Earthlink 5.0 and I usually do not run Ad-Watch, but I did the other day to make sure the worm I received wasnt changing any registry items. The ad-watch is a component that you can add with Ad-Aware so thats why it is in there. If I want to remove these two programs, should I just run HJT again and check and fix those items?

Also, these items were not available to check in the HJT log to check and fix:

O23 - Service: SAVScan - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\SAVScan.exe (file missing) G
O23 - Service: Symantec Network Drivers Service (SNDSrvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe (file missing)

and these folders were no longer there when I went to delete them.

c:\PROGRAM FILES~1\mcafee.com\ <<< delete that folder
C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\ <<< delete that folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ <<< delete that folder

I am assuming they were taken care of earlier.

I finally figured out why the windows installer and "instant share devices" windows kept popping up on startup. I guess one of the malware programs had corrupted a file within my hewlett packard printer and camera software and the startup programs were freaking out. Once I reinserted the disk and updated, it wasnt a problem anymore.

One more thing, everything on startup is runnig really slowly. It takes a good couple minutes once the desktop boots, for AVG, ZoneAlarm, and my HP software startup programs to load. Is there something that is slowing them down because they were a faster before?

I believe I have answered and provided everything for you and the new HJT log is below. Lastly, all of the tools and programs I downloaded during all of this, should I delete them off my computer, or should I keep them around for use in the future? Thanks again for all your help. You have been a lifesaver.

The items above in red I either did not recognize or I thought maybe they should be removed and should the panda scan still be running even though I am done with it. What do you think?

Thanks again.

Good morning, (EST) I will attempt to give you answers to your questions first.
If you no longer use Earthlink, I suggest you remove it from the computer. Use HJT to delete the line and navigate to the folder highlited above in red and delete it. (do this right away, the Process Manager built into HJT stops the item for running)

The adwatch item, remove from the log but DO NOT remove the file (turn it off so it does not run from within the program or MSConfig)

The 016 - DPF are ActiveX plugins, you can remove them anytime you wish. By their nature, if you return to the website after that you would be prompted to download it again (to use the site).

http://www.castlecops.com/O18.html says that 018 item is:
Protocol {9D6CC632-1337-4A33-9214-2DA092E776F4} L x-excid mimectl.dll Microsoft Exchange Server 2003
so it is not bad, why it is there I do not know. Perhaps you do?

I will remove what we discussed, leave anything you do not wish removed:

One more thing, everything on startup is runnig really slowly. You can usually control boot times somewhat by controlling what you load, see this: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
If you don't use it everytime, then turn it off and start it manually when used. DO NOT turn off any security programs. I see a lot of folks loading all of their printing and scanning hardware every day when they probably use it once a month.
Here is more great information to help:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html

You should remove the tools we used, most do not update and the newest version are needed when used. The exception would be ATF-Cleaner. A nice small tool, you may keep it if you wish.
If I missed anything please let me know.

Desktop Messenger <<< this item is a bit of a resource hog and it gets installed along with other Logitech products (mouse, cam) because the EULA is not read. If you do not use it, I would remove it from your computer.

AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ConMgr.exe] "c:\Program Files\EarthLink 5.0\conmgr.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AWMON] "C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Shared\Ad-Watch.exe"

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

c:\Program Files\EarthLink 5.0\ <<< delete that folder if Earthlink is no longer used

Let's clean our you System Restore files in case anything bad is backed up in them like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Well, I think everything is in good shape now thanks to you and everyone else who helped with this fix. I have also done some reading on the links you posted and have updated all my protection software and added a couple more and everything seems to be running well and faster than before. Thanks again and hopefully I wont have to talk to you again for a long time.
