View Full Version : smitfraud-c.toolbar888
hi: i dowloaded a bunch of viruses. i am running norton, added spyware doctor from pctools and prevx1. spyware is finding "trojan.downloader.small.cml" and it keeps reacurring. spybot is finding "smitfraud-C.toolbar888". I noticed with prevx1 that on reboot microsoft messenger is downloading files, i suspect that messenger is the courier for my virus, so i renamed messenger from exe to old, so messenger is not working now. i ran vundo remover and it found three files and removed them. i need help what to do next. please help. thanks. also advise which virus checker i should keep.

Thanks for returning your information, I am having a look at the log now. Are you telling me this is all that was returned in the avtivirus scan?
A0003088.dll Win32/Vundo!generic infected C:\System Volume Information\_restore{14157744-4FA2-4CAF-BAFB-72CC49941087}\RP3\
If that is the case, this is in your System Restore files and this link will explain how to clean those:

You sure have a load of stuff installed on the computer, wonder it even moves.
Let's start by removing what I see should go and cleaning to see what happens.
You have so many 016's I hesitate tying myself up researching them all. Please look at all O16 - DPF: items and tell me if there are any you do not know.
spybot is finding "smitfraud-C.toolbar888 Is this program up to date, see this information:
FALSE POSITIVE
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=8668
Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888
Do you own PrevxOne? Provide that information in the next post, for now it will block out changes,
Right click on the Prevx icon in your system tray at the bottom-right corner of your screen and choose Show Management Console..
On the Management Console click the Protection Level drop-down menu. You will see three levels:
Maximum
Off
User Defined
To disable all protection set the level to Off. You will receive a prompt asking "You are about to change your security settings. Do you wish to continue?" Click Yes.
Click the X on the upper right hand corner to exit the Management console.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, and any information I requested above. I need to know exactly what your malware problems are.
Thanks
after i ran the vundu virus remover i found on one of your threads to someone else it cleared the problem. i downloaded a free trial of prevx1 for 30 days. i will follow your instructions and repost soon. thanks for all your great help.

Thanks for looking at those, the easiest way to say this. These are ActiveX controls, you can check and remove any of them you wish. If you visit the site, you would be prompted to download them again before you could use the site.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
Check any 016 DPF you wish
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Restart the computer so so changes can go into effect, then post a new HJT log.
btw , as i wrote at beginning i changed messenger from exe to old to stop messenger from working at bootup. What exactly do you want to know about this?
Thanks
i noticed on prevex1 (when you open prevx1 console, you can see all workings of computer)that as soon as my notebook boots up, windows messeger started and it was installing something, which i figure is virus related. this happened on each reboot, so i found the msmsgs.exe file and renamed it to .old so it would not start. i think if i turn it back to .exe it will again start installing something. does this make any sense??
on reboot after removal of 016's, system found new drivers etc to reinstall(scansoft)

I apologize for the wait, I was away from the computer for a while. Let's start with this:
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/msmsgs/
O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)
There is evidence in the log that you have both MSN Instant Messenger and Windows Messenger on the computer. Windows Messenger is installed with Windows XP and the one you are asking about is either part of MSN Explorer (premium) or it comes as a stand alone program that can be downloaded. When the computer in running, this program is often communicating with Microsoft Servers (unless you have it turned off) as is Win dows Messenger if you are running it. Here is information from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330117 and though the version may be old, the information is basically the same. While any program can get infected, this is more than likely not the case and the danger here is in using the program to sahre infected files. If you have questions, please post them.
scansoft: here is the google on that. http://www.google.com/search?q=scansoft&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7GGLG
You must have the product onboard, I doubt that removing ActiveX pluggins would have anything to do with it, it may be a program set to look for updates and finding a new driver to install.
As far as I can see your HJT log is clean of malware. I see Prevx running on the computer so I will assume you purchased it. I know it is a good program but rather and intense resource user and I also question running Spyware Doctor at the same time. Might be something you would want to ask Prevx technical support.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

You wrote "You sure have a load of stuff installed on the computer, wonder it even moves.
Let's start by removing what I see should go and cleaning to see what happens.
You have so many 016's I hesitate tying myself up researching them all. Please look at all *O16 - DPF*: items and tell me if there are any you do not know."
is there any thing else i should remove to quicken up my computer. which type of items mostly slow down computer. Thanks again...

Anything that says this O4 - HKLM\..\Run can be turned off in MSConfig (System Configuration Utility) here is information:
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ and here are informational links to help you research the items:

Most programs can be started via Start > All Programs when you only need them once in a while. This will make your boot and shutdown faster and save the resources they need to run all of the time unused. Be careful not to turn off any security programs and I suggest a few at a time, then watch for any reaction you don't want. You can always turn that one back on.
Here are a few links to help you with Services running that may not need, Just be careful not to turn off anything Windows requires running.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your kind words:eek: the helpers are all volunteers but the expenses to run a website like this must be hugh, so I am sure your donation will be well used and appreciated. Be careful...it is a cyber-jungle out there...Phil
