I noticed on my internet Netmeter yesterday that there was continuous activity in the background even when my browser Internet Explorer was not connected.

I ran a Spybot scan which picked up a few things including Limewire (my pesky kids!) and after zapping them the background actvity stopped.

However, today the same problem is there. Have run Spybot but it has picked up nothing.

Could someone who knows about these things please have a look at my log below and see if there is anything wrong in there?

Many thanks in anticipation, Rob

Welcome Rob from S. Wales from Phil in S. Florida and the Safer Networking forum. I see no antivirus scan so I have to assume you missed these very important instructions.
"BEFORE you POST" Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
Make sure you have followed those instructions and you may wait on the antivirus scan, I will let you know if I need it.

Let's start with this information for your benefit:

Thanks for your reply pskelley - I can appreciate you have taken time to give me information - but the truth is I dont understand what your actual advice is.

Maybe I should have explained more fully in my intitial post I routinely update daily Spybot, AVG, Windows Defender and MS security patches. I also regularly run Adware SE. I also did look through the Spybot "Before you post" email, I tried to run the Pandascan but it wouldn't run (I have since retried and found that it does work this time - shall I run it now?). Hence I ran the highjack this software.

In your reply, the links are extensive and I understand very little of what they mean - are you listing these links as support your advice for me to delete the 04O4 - HKCU..... C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.exe, and O16 - DP..... line on the highjackthis log??
(I will take the party poker stuff off as well by the way)

Look forward to your next advice.

Thanks, Rob

I apologize if I was not clear with the advice, since you realized Limewire was not something you wanted on the computer, most kids do not realize that even though the program may not be illegal, the files that are being shared aften are. I advise that you remove all of that stuff from the computer I posted information about including NetMeter. I suggest you do this.

HJT needs it's own folder to store logs, backups for safety and the .exe in. If you wish to run it from the folder it is in now:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Downloads\HijackThis.exe <<< please reutrn there and right click a blank spot and make a new folder. Call it HJT and move HJT.exe and the log that is there into that folder. When we use HJT it will place a backup there also.
It will look like this: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\HJT\HijackThis.exe

1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\ <<< Java is out of date, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
pdate to the newest version then uninsatall any old version in Add Remove programs.

2) While you are in Add Remove Programs, uninstall NetMeter, SpywareBot, and any other program you know does not belong there, if you are unsure let me know and I will take a look.

3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [spywarebot] C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.exe -boot
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [C:\Program Files\NetMeter\NetMeter.exe] C:\Program Files\NetMeter\NetMeter.exe
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/noc...up1.0.0.15.cab

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\ <<< delete that folder

C:\Program Files\NetMeter\ <<< delete that folder

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log. Monitor for a bit, a certain amount of activity is normal. What are you running for a firewall? If you believe you have to monitor internet activity, let me know and I will see if I can locate freeware programs that are safe.
Keep an eye on things for a day or so, it may well be that the junk we removed was responsible for the excess activity.

Thanks

Thanks for explaining things Phil.

I was in two minds whether to follow your advice or not, as I had 2 concerns:
1. I have relied on Netmeter for over 12 months now to monitor and control my teenage boys use of the internet, so was reluctant to lose this tool.
2. I purchased Spywarebot for a few months months ago for about $25 I think, as it was a recommended antispyware tool, so was reluctant to write off this money.

But on reflection I decided it was best to use the valuable advice you have given, so have just successfully carreid out the instructions given.

I have attachced the new HJT log below for your info.

But how do I now best find out if there is any ongoing background internet activity - by clicking on the internet double-computer icon maybe? In which case was is the normal "tickover" byte rate please?

Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob, and I understand totally. This is why I presended you with the information first. The folks who fight the good fight against the malware purveyors of this world hold up a few standards and CastleCops is surely one of those:
http://www.castlecops.com/ When the hackers want to deal a blow to us all, it's CastleCops they attack:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=castlecops+ddos+attacks&btnG=Google+Search

http://spywarewarrior.com/ maintains the list of malware programs keeping us informed, and in the case of SpywareBot I am always astounded that they do what they do. I volunteer at Safer which is the home of Spybot S&D and the creator, Thomas Kolla give his product away. How about the audacity of using the information Spybot S&D gives away free to charge people. I would call that fraud myself. Just borderline to what is going on with a load of the junk that hackers who are infecting computer and making popups that direct to "rouge cleaners" that don't work just so they can get that credit card number and $40 from folks who just don't know any better.

recommended antispyware tool <<< you may want to send whoever told you this the rouge product list from Spyware Warrior.

Let me have a look at the HJT log and then I will post some information that may help you.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 22:33:05, on 09/03/2007

With the exception of the location of HJT.exe, as far as I can see there are no problems in this HJT log.

Please research the product carefully before you download, review the EULA. Let me know if I can do more.

Many thanks again for your comprehensive advice.

Just two more questions please before closing this one down.

I have read some of the links, but would like to double check - can you confirm that the "free" Spybot S&D product is safe to continue to use?

Do you know of a safe software package that I can use as an alternative to Netmeter, which will monitor our family's internet usage as with our ISP package we pay for how much we upload/download a month?

Regards, Rob

Hello Rob, you are surely welcome. I can confirm Spybot S&D is one of the very best freeware products available. I run it on three computers and have for around eight years. Kept updated, immunized and run once a week, or once a month depending on your internet activity, it is an excellant tool in the layered protection needed in the new world of cyber-hackers.

Did you look in the link I provided, not having used the software you are asking about, It's hard for me to guarantee a product.

Try looking here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/main-nf.htm

Here are some links:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=freeware+ISP+usage+monitor&btnG=Google+Search

Due to time constraints, I am not able to reference check these, and so far the link at SpywareWarrior on the subject is all I have located. I suggest you do a little research before choosing even freeware and then also read the EULA agreement carefully before accepting the download. Legally they have to spell out exactly what you are accepting in the EULA.

Thanks
