View Full Version : IE Google Links Hijacked

Hi,
I've got a problem with IE7 and Google. When I click on a link in the Google search results it takes me to some other (apparently random) site. The same thing occurs with other search engines (e.g. Live Search). The problem is only in IE - Google works fine in Netscape, Opera and Mozilla.

I've followed the instructions in "before You Post" and here is my hijackThis log:

Welcome to the forum, you are hijacked: http://whois.domaintools.com/85.255.113.118

We have work to do before we can start, first see this information:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html

C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\
C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\
Please uninstall one of those before you post another HJT log.

You are running System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) in Selective Startup mode. I need to see all logs in Normal mode. You may return to SS to save your resources when we finish.

I want to comment that we know only to run one antivirus program and one firewall. While the jury is still out on how many spyware programs are too many, I am finding it difficult to remove your malware with all you have running and I am going to suggest that:
Windows Defender, TeaTimer, WinPatrol and AVG Anti-Spyware are too many. We will use AVG Anti-Spyware and after that I suggest you turn it off completely or uninstall it for starters.

Let's start the cleanup process like this, please follow the directions carefull and in the numbered order.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

3) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

4) TeaTimer will block the changes we must make, turn it off until you finish:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

5) WinPatrol may also: Right-click the running icon of Winpatrol in the system tray and choose exit. It will automatically restart at next boot.

Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.

6) Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

(Hold the logs and reports until we finish)

7) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.113.118 85.255.112.100

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

8) Use the instructions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, be sure to delete or at least quarantine anything it finds and save the report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

9) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the report from Fixwareout, the report from AVG Anti-Spyware and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Your Java program is out of date and that will get you infected. See this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04 <<< out of date, download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.

Hi,
Many thanks fior your quick response and detailed instructions. I've done everything you suggested (including updating my Java Runtime) and the problem seems to be fixed. (By the way, I'd only had two virus checkers running for a few days as my Norton subscription was about to expire and I was planning to switch to AVG but wanted to try it first; I've now removed Norton.)

First the FixWareout report:

OK Chris and thanks for returning your information, I will say I understand about the two antivirus programs, but what happens is they both are trying to do the same thing and you are actually less safe at that point. Even for a short period it is better to stop one from running. As you saw, Microsoft goes so far as to say two should not even be installed at once. Let's have a look at your information:

Fixwareout, thanks Lonny...what a tool:bigthumb:

AVG Anti-Spyware: I may be wrong but I am not sure AVG can clean the Norton\NProtect Bin. If you remove all of Norton, the bin and the stored junk would go with it. Just to be sure:
http://service1.symantec.com/support/nsw.nsf/ba62122e5d142a6588256d87006b22be/831aa5c6ef0d750685256c370048ad89?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam
If the bin is still there, Norton has not been totally removed, I will know when I view the HJT log.

O23 - Service: WinFX Font Cache 3.0.51116.0 (FontCache3.0.51116.0) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\WinFX\v3.0\WPF\PresentationFontCache.exe
If you assure me those two service are valid, then you are good to go. My authority on the services: http://www.castlecops.com/O23.html does not know them, but they have a time keeping up with all of the new ones.

Assuming those are going to be valid, and understanding you have taken care of the Java update, I will ask you to do this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Hi,
Thanks for the follow-up. There's no sign of the Norton recycle bin and the two services you highlighted seem OK (part of Dell printer driver and part of .NET 3 respectively). I've cleaned up system restore and, having read through the links you suggested, am running CleanUp and am no longer running internet-facing applications with admin privileges.

Everything now seems to be OK. Thanks once again for taking the trouble to help.

Chris
