Would somebody kindly tell me the spec, to add an avatar, so that it will show on posts.
I cannot find an option for adding avatars in the user CP

Me neither! No uploader?? Why is this?
Hello.
For various reasons, the WebMaster allows avatars only for Team members and volunteer helpers.
Sorry for any inconvenience. :)
tashi, that is not true.
Some junior members have avatars.
Junior members with avatars:

:greeting: I am glad that you asked that question Jagcat because I spent a lot of time yesterday trying to figure it out. now we know.

Actually it is true, :p: some members registered before the new defaults were set. :)
Can you just allow avatars for all ?

Sorry, I don't make the policies.
Hello.

Part of the reason for the decision is a security matter.
Tashi sweety :flowers:
You can't make an exception for me  Just a red nose as an avatar will do fine ;)

I am a member of many Forums and they don't have "security" issues!
Could this be reviewed sometime by the "Bosses" to have all of us able to upload avatars. To say it's a security situation belies the fact that we ARE using SpyBot. ;)
Hello.

It is a site security matter, not your personal computer. ;)
Update:
We now have three sets of avatars for members to choose from. :2thumb:

What's the big deal? If the webmaster doesn't allow it, then you can't have it. It's their site, not ours. I'm here for the info anyway.

Great job!!!
However, there may be an unforeseen problem. You have included so many avatars for people to choose from, I envision people frittering away hour after hour trying to decide among them all.
Now you're going to have to come up with something like a Myers-Briggs personality test to help people narrow their choices.

*sigh That is more than 50 pages of Avatars. I'll need one hour, before I can choose one. Lols, all of them look so good.
I still haven't decided lol
too many pages! How about increasing the number of avatars per page? Or like md usa spybot fan said, having a select few?
Another idea is that instead of having people uploading images, how about having people using image urls?

Perhaps. Did so for the penquins.
Or like md usa spybot fan said, having a select few?
I had the impression md usa spybot fan was making a joke. ;) However such a decision would be based on user input.
A large choice seems preferable to having none at all, and bear in mind that one person's preferences might not be another's.
I wouldn't like to remove a person's favourite.

Sorry not likely, that was the point regarding such as being a security issue and why we didn't, and probably won't, provide that permission.
There are also other matters at hand to address, rather than spending one's day checking each new member's avatar to make sure it is appropiate for a family forum. :p:
Stock avatars are a nice solution, I hope people will enjoy the option. :)
Cheers.

Appropriateness is nothing compared to guarding against all the exploits and vulnerabilities in media files these days. I figured that was the primary reason for no custom avatars.
Perhaps a compromise could be that a user could upload an avatar if they have been registered for some predetermine amount of time coupled with a minimum of some predetermined number of posts: sort of a way to ensure that the person is a valid member of the community and likely trustworthy enough not to post a porn or exploit avatar. Plus, that way it would drastically cut down the number of avatars to be checked to a feasible amount. (Would be even easier if there were some kind of scanner that can check a pic for vulnerabilities.)

One wonders. . . .would those that would use "inappropriate" avatars . .spend their time cleaning up computer issues?
Me thinks not . .
They spend their time on other less productive avenues . .

That’s probably because of the restrictions. If you have to invest heavily before being allowed to do something, then you will probably not do it bad when given the opportunity.
How about allowing a user to submit an image (like an animated .gif) to a
moderator, and the moderator would put it someplace on a server, and then
give the user the URL for it... and then the system could allow use of a custom
avatar as long as the url of the avatar is part of that server (any other
URL would return a message saying that custom avatars have to be
submitted to the moderator).
Or allow users to submit an image, and a moderator could set it as their avatar.
I know it's a lot of trouble for moderators, but maybe someone who doesn't feel
qualified to be an administrator / helper for other things would like to take on
the somewhat straightforward task of being the Avatar "go-to" person?
I gotta try something here... can I post an image in a message... I'm going to
see if my Avatar will post as an image... here goes...
I guess so.
I don't see how avatars would be much different.
If someone posted an inappropriate one, I'm sure the admin would
be noted by whoever thought it offensive... so I doubt that is the
issue.
But an image file (if only .jpg and .gif extensions were allowed) should
not be able to cause a security risk AFAIK, so... I say give it a try.
I know, it ain't my forum, but there is something personal about having
an avatar, especially if you use it in a lot of places and are known by it.
So I'm just offering my opinions as food for thought & discussion (& ridicule?).
Hello,
I know it's a lot of trouble for moderators,
Indeed.
but maybe someone who doesn't feel qualified to be an administrator / helper for other things would like to take onthe somewhat straightforward task of being the Avatar "go-to" person?
Sorry, it does not work like that. :fear:
No biggie... it'd be nice, but I can live w/o it.
S'up with your dates on these posts? Just wondering.

Glad I read this thread before I tried to upload an avatar. Just so everyone knows, it was going to be a cat. :)

So glad to have read this thread. I was wondering why my avatar won't load. All I have is a faceless person outlined in grey. Kinda creepy  ! My chosen Avator, however, is seen on the left side of Profile near bottom. It's kinda pretty. Anyway, I guess the policies have remained the same. Thank you for this thread.

Oops!1
I've been gone a long time. I just recently reinstated my membership here. I hadn't posted in so long. After updating my Profile & selecting an Avatar, it did not load until I entered my first post above! How wonderful! I guess that means Avatars are being loaded now? Or ... maybe it's because I had opened this account in 2011? Anyway, nice to have an Avatar!
Now also wondering why the kinda creepy faceless avatar is still there at the upper right side of my profile, while the sunlit sky avatar is seen on bottom left side?
Also, just rediscovered "Edit Post" button. Guess I could have just edited the one above.
