I carried out the online scan with eTrust. Although I entered my email address, they didn't sent me a report. The outcome was 'no problems'. I tried the other links - Trendmicro and Panda kept freezing, and BitDefender's link wasn't found.

I know you didn't ask for this but I thought it might help - Avg 7.5 (free version) has this information in the virus vault:

ATTRIBUTE NAME / VALUE
Object name Firefox Setup 1.5.0.1.exe
Object path c:\program files\mozilla firefox
Discovery virus identified worm/vb.aug
File size 4.94 mb
Healable No
Source Backup copy
Status Infected

Thank you :)

Hi, welcome to Safer Networking Forums!

The infected file that AVG deleted is a firefox setup..May I ask where you got that firefiox setup? Did you download it from other sites or did it come directly from Mozilla?

*Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG Antispyware.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/).
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update. Do not use it yet!

*Download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune

Do not use it yet.

*We need to temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer, it may stop our fix.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First:
- Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
- Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
- Open Spybot S&D
- Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
- Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
- If your firewall raises a question, say OK
- Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
- Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
- Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

*Open HijackThis > choose Scan Only > Place a checkmark in the boxes beside these entries in bold.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

*Please run AVG AntiSpyware, and run a full scan as follow:

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG AntiSpyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.

Launch AVG AntiSpyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
AVG AntiSpyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.

Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save Report As" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system. (Make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close AVG AntiSpyware.
Reboot to normal mode.

See if this online scan would work..

*Run Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/english/kavwebscan.html)

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then start to download the latest Definition Files.
Once the Scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings.
In the Scan Settings, make that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
o Scan Options:
+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases

You asked about my Firefox browser - I can't think that I would have downloaded it from anywhere other than mozilla.com.

Forcedel - it's a programme I've had for years and it's never caused a problem for me.

I thought I'd better mention a problem I have had over the last few days (since noticing the virus) is that the scrolling function on my mousepad has disappeared and I can't find a way to restore it.

Also, another problem is that my system tray was completely cleared out of icons - ie avg, zonealarm, spybot teatimer, power function.

Can I turn teatimer back on now?

Thanks again for all your help :bigthumb:

Hi,

You asked about my Firefox browser - I can't think that I would have downloaded it from anywhere other than mozilla.com.

Ok. I'll report that to Grisoft.

Forcedel - it's a programme I've had for years and it's never caused a problem for me.

It's a false positive.

The virus is a false positive. It is less likely that firefox.exe which came from mozilla is infected..As for those two problems, I don't think they are malware related. I'm very sorry but my knowledge is only limited to Malware Removal so I can't help you with that problem. You could register here: www.pcpitstop.com , create a thread and ask about your problem.

Sure.

*Your Java is out of date....
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
Click Start > Control Panel
Click Add/Remove Programs
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download Java Runtime Environment 6 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp), and install it to your computer.

Reboot and post back if you have any questions :)

Hi Angelfire

Thank you for that, I've got the latest Java now, and Teatimer is back on.

I was just wondering, could I have been hacked with a virus being put into firefox? I don't know much about these things, you can probably tell!

I'll register on the PC Pitstop forum later :)

Thank you for all your help, I really do appreciate it :bigthumb:

That is less likely to happen..It's most probably a false positive by AVG..

You're welcome.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your pc's security.

Install SpyWare Blaster
~You can download it from here (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
~You can read the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Install WinPatrol
~You can download it from here (http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html)
~You can get some information about how WinPatrol works here (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

IESpyAds
~You can download it from here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm#IESPYAD)
~If you want to know how IEspyads work you can take a look at it here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
~Please note that IESpyAds only works with Internet Explorer.

Note: Make sure you update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?" (http://castlecops.com/t7736-So_how_did_I_get_infected_in_the_first_place.html)

Happy safe surfing!

Hi again :)

I read Tony Klein's article this morning - I have to say that I don't really do much that could get me infected - I was surprised when I thought I'd picked up a virus. The amount of security software I've got on this laptop has doubled its weight

I already had spywareblaster but I've downloaded the other two programmes and installed them.

Thank you for everything, it's very much appreciated :bigthumb:
