View Full Version : Problem using DeskTop ShortCuts

Hi,
I am new to this forum but have been using Spybot and Spyware Blaster for several years now. I also use Panda anti virus. This past few weeks now I have been having a problem using some of my desktop shorcuts (for windows explorer in particular). If I double click on it my desktop items would all disappear for a few seconds then reappear and my link for my printer in the toolbar at the bottom would disappear. However, if I do a right click on mouse and hit open it will then open with no problem. Today I also discovered while trying to open the help and search panel it was taking several minutes to open and when I did a search it provided me with topics but when I clicked on a topic the window closed (I tried this several times). I have done scans with Spybot and Panda and found nothing. My computer has been running fairly well just untill recently. I noticed it mostly when I tried to install a software from Microsoft that is supposed to analyse your computer to see if it is compatable for Vista. I uninstalled the software, as it never worked properly and tried a system restore from a period before I installed the software but the problem still persists. I currently am using Windows XP
I would appreciate any help you can provide.
Thanks
Brewster

Welcome for the forum, I am not sure if I can help but I would be glad to take a look if you will just follow these directions:
"BEFORE you POST" Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
Please read and follow all instructions and post all required logs or reports, anything less will slow your process. Use "Post Reply" to post the information in the instructions and stay in the same topic.

You may find information to help with the problem here:

I also ran the updated Spybot Search and Destroy. Nothing in red was found.
Hope this helps. Again thanks for any assistance.

Thanks for returning your information, nothing but a couple of cookies in the Panda, if you don't need them, see this information:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm

Not a lot in the HJT log either, you may want to check for a Java update, I believe it went to 1.6, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

You do have a nasty piece of adware called Netster and an old ewido DPF (obsolete) let's to this.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O16 - DPF: {193C772A-87BE-4B19-A7BB-445B226FE9A1} (ewidoOnlineScan Control) - http://downloads.ewido.net/ewidoOnlineScan.cab
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://software-dl.real.com/11c45567...p/RdxIE601.cab
Netster

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Follow the directions in the link to download and run ATF-Cleaner:
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=1925

Restart and post a new HJT log, let me know how you are running.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I cleaned up my files using the ATF cleaner and fixed the files you suggested in the HJT log however the problem with opening files on my desktop (and even in the "start" - programs) still persists. It is not consistant though (sometimes works and sometimes doesn't). It usually happens when initially logged on. If I do a right click on a file with my mouse and click "open" it works but not by double clicking the file. Or if I do a right click on my desktop and click Properties and change the desktop settings and then apply it will work (but again only for the period logged on).
Anyway here is the most recent HJT log done after completing your recommendations. Any further advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Brewster

Thanks for returning you information and the feedback. The issue you are having does not sound like a malware problem. I will have a couple of suggestions and I will suggest a forum that deals with WindowsXP issues.
I see no malware in your HJT log, but I think you need a Java update, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Start > Control Panel > Java Console (little coffee cup) and click the updates tab and choose to update. Once you have the newest version, tehn uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.

In case this is a corrupted or missing windows file, try this first:
OK... try this. Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

If that does not help, that have a look here for a solution:

Keep me posted...Thanks

Hi again,
I tried updating Java as you suggested and it says I already have the latest update.

I also ran the scan but it found nothing.

I checked out kellys-corner but to me it is very intimidating. I have a moderate knowledge about computers and this site seems to over thousands of diiferent fixes but with very little explaination. One I found was "Active Desktop Enable or Disable" Is it something I shoud try? Do I just download it or run it?

Another little side question. I have had some issues with the computer suddenly (not too frquently) shutting down and restarting. When the error log is fed back to Microsoft an Internet Explorer page pops up and explains the problem and any possible solutions. They say it is a driver problem but do not isolate which one. A software known as "Driver Updates" by Touchstone scans your hard drive and reccomends updates then finds them (at a cost of course). Is this a recommended method?
Thanks again,
Brewster

Understand once we move beyond malware issues, the most I can do is point you in a direction where you may find your answers. Once we go beyond malware, which I have worked with for about eight years now, then I have what you have, moderate knowledge and a fair ability at locating information. I can not say this or that will work, only that your answers may be there. It seems to me something has changed some setting.

I personally do not keep many shortcuts on the Desktop, but once in a while one will quit working. When that happens I delete the shortcut and navigate to the executable and right click, then click send to Desktop. The new shortcut always works.

Here is information about troubleshooting shutdown/startup issues.

Have your thought about doing a repair install?

Windows offers a free diagnostic tool:
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

PCPitStop will let you run a free diagnostic:
http://www.pcpitstop.com/ they wil also scan your drivers free:
http://pcpitstop.com/driverscan.asp
I believe the same service, Touchstone does the scanning.

Is this a recommended method?
I personally do not update drivers unless I am having having an issue, then I do it manually.
Keep in mind, when you do windows updates, not only are you shown the critical stuff, you are also shown stuff that is available, but not critical, and drivers that are available for your system. Most folks prefer to get the driver from the company instead of Microsoft which has a poor history where drivers are concerned. Take a look here and you will see where the drivers are reported during the updates scan in figure one.

Thank you for all your usefull help and guidance. As I said before the desktop problem is not a major issue just more of a nuisance. I was more concerned about being infected with some spyware or virus.
Thanks
Brewster :)
