I know thanks very much for your reply. My laptop gets used by everyone in my house and so its hard to keep it clean but I try.

My laptop turns on but hangs on a black screen and then keyboard is also locked so I can't do anything with it now?

Any suggestions.

p.s. it will run in safe mode but I can't update spybot, comes up with an error

This is a Smitfraud infection and I did post instructions for you:
Then you may read and follow these instructions:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=4015

Are you receiving an error messages from Windows? If so post them "word for word".

If you can't update Spybot now, then run the rest of the fix, Smitfraudfix will remove a lot of the junk causing you problems. Post the logs mentioned at the end of the fix and use "Post Reply" to stay in the same topic.

Thanks

As I said earlier my laptop is just a black screen and so i could not follow the instructions below completely

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=4015

Here's what I did, Saved the

.exe version:
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

to cd from another computer

Then booted my computer in safe mode as its the only working mode

and copied the file to the desktop and then followed the instructions from there.

i.e. ran smitfraudfix in safe mode and continued to follow the other instructions as they should have but still xp normal mode will not open?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Yep...post any error message you are receiving in case they give us any information, beyond that, if you can not run the tools we need to use, you will want to start looking at this information:

Hi sorry for late reply,

I think I need to restore windows but my CD is in my student house which I won't be visiting for another month. When I have tried that I will let you know of any changes.

Thanks

P.S. Should I start a new thread in a month or just post on this one?

Also pls keep this thread alive so i can refer back to the instructions and links.

Thanks
Andy

Hi Andy, for that much time, if you need to please, start a new topic. I will close this one. Copy and paste any information you need to a notepad and save it in your MyDocuments. The topic will be archived as soon as possible.

Thanks...Phil
